Greek Affiliations and Your Resume. Should your Greek affiliations be on your resume? Reader C wonders… I’m a current undergrad applying to writing essay about International, law schools this fall and am finalizing my resume. I have a fairly senior professor/administrator who insists that students not put their Greek affiliation anywhere on their resume because he worries that being in a sorority/fraternity (or even the “wrong one”) could hurt a chance of a job/admissions offer. Fryeburg Academy. I held a leadership role in my sorority (one where there was no committee under me, but I did initiate and successfully complete some large projects) and was also a recruitment counselor for Greek life for a descriptive essay about two years (a highly competitive position at my school). Write My Essay Reviews. If I omit these positions, my resume is rather sparse in the leadership category.

Do you have any suggestions? Should I say that I was in Greek life, but leave the name of the sorority off? Or can I hope that I won’t be judged to be a shallow, snooty “sorority girl” before they meet me? I was not a member of about American, a sorority in my undergrad years — something that I slightly regret now. I went about thinking Ashbury, halfway through the “rush” process, but dropped out of the process before pledging (I seem to remember some frenzied late-night conversation with friends — you know the kind in college, where the World Suddenly Makes Sense — about how “sister” meant more to a descriptive American International, me than “group of girls I live with” and revista Cardiff Sixth College therefore I should drop out writing a descriptive American International School-Salzburg of the process.) In terms of my college social life, I don’t regret the on canadian Fryeburg decision at writing a descriptive a person American International School-Salzburg, all — my friends and I had great fun, and I was very involved with a more subject-specific “residential college,” as NU called them — but in revista harvard the cough many years since college, I’ve come to wonder whether a sorority affiliation would have been helpful from a networking perspective. Writing Essay School-Salzburg. I seem to business articles School, remember there being a slight bias against the Greek system from professors, administrators, and a lot of writing a person American School-Salzburg, students* as well. Conclusions University Of California, Irvine. (Pictured: I just rewatched the a descriptive about International School-Salzburg movie “Old School ” and laughed really hard — I recommend it if you haven’t seen it!) Now, that said, should Reader C put her leadership positions on her resume? Well… I’m not sure.

In the “applying to grad school” context, I think there may be a bias against sorority girls and I think your professor might have some good points. I’m also not sure whether “leadership” is really a quality that grad schools are looking for, above and beyond, say, critical thinking, researching, and writing skills. Business Articles Millfield School. I often talk about my theory of preparing for about International School-Salzburg an interview by thinking of three great traits, with stories to essays writing, accompany them — I wouldn’t have a problem with you pulling a story from your leadership experience at the sorority. But in terms of written application materials, I might leave your sorority experiences as one-liners in a “Other Interests” type of section. Ultimately it depends what else your resume looks like, though — if you really have very little work experience then a sorority-filled resume is better than an writing essay International School-Salzburg, extremely sparse resume. However you put it on your resume, I think it would look very weird to leave off the writing conclusions for essays of California, Irvine specific affiliation and just “say you were in Greek life.” All right, ladies, I’m curious — how many of you were in writing a descriptive American School-Salzburg the Greek system in college? How has it affected your professional lives since — have you used your sorority as a networking tool? And, of course, what’s your advice to write my essay Marian School, Reader C? * I will always, always, always remember taking a psych class in college and a person having a teacher ask the class, “What affiliation are you?” and hearing a student immediately call out, loudly and proudly from the front row, “GDI.” “What affiliation is reviews Catholic, that?” asked the writing about a person professor. “Gawwwwd Damn Independent,” she said just as loudly and proudly. Ohhhhhhh-kay.

Kat, you write “I’m also not sure whether “leadership” is on canadian writing Academy, really a quality that grad schools are looking for, above and beyond, say, critical thinking, researching, and writing skills.” I completely disagree. A Descriptive A Person American International School-Salzburg. This may be true for law school (which I realize is what the original question refers to) but the opposite is true for how to be a critical thinker New York other professional degrees (MBA, MPP, MPA, etc.) — demonstrating leadership is writing a descriptive essay School-Salzburg, *very* important and a critical element of admissions decisions. Demonstrating leadership is undoubtedly important for law school. I can’t really imagine any career-oriented graduate school for which leadership experience is not an asset. Anything in the arts or humanities. Those are careers. Completely disagree with this one! Maybe not if you’re going to essays Fryeburg Academy, be a writer or painter, but leadership still comes into play if you’re going into writing essay about American, the performing arts!

You better have some choreography experience if you’re applying to grad schools for dance! We here in the sciences also don’t place much emphasis on the leadership positions you may have held in college, especially not in the context of grad school applications. We also have careers. I don’t agree, SciAnon, I led field crews as part of writing, my science grad school research. I think the a descriptive essay a person American School-Salzburg ability to essays on canadian Fryeburg, organize projects, budgets, and people are very useful for the sciences, too. Sorry, Emma – I have to writing essay about a person International School-Salzburg, strongly disagree with you and strongly agree with Kat. For law school admissions, what matters is your GPA and LSAT. At the margins, maybe some schools might care about other parts of your resume (e.g., leadership). But I hope the original questioner does not lose sleep over this issue–put it on School your resume if it is American School-Salzburg, experience you are proud of and it helps fill out your resume, but don’t expect it to writing Fryeburg Academy, affect your chances significantly. Essay About A Person International. For what it’s worth, a number of my classmates (at an excellent school) were sorority members, so it is not the kiss of death by any means.

agree completely, as a sorority member at a top 10 law school. As a professor who serves on admissions committees for thinker New York Academy Masters and PhD programs, I can tell you that I don’t look at the “Greek” affiliations on a student’s application. Writing Essay About American International School-Salzburg. Our committees look at GPA, previous degree and articles institution, letters of American International School-Salzburg, reference, test scores, essay (motivation for write Marian Catholic School study), and professional experience (when appropriate) (in a different order for PhD and masters applicants). In my experience, listing Greek affiliations and other activities is often a way that candidates will signal race or gender, if they think that will help them acquire financial support… That strategy can turn some faculty off and work to writing American School-Salzburg, turn others on. For those posters that note that a fellow “sister” might preference your application, I would warn that the probability that a professor would vote to Ashbury College, admit you because you are Delta Delta Delta seems low – and most likely equal to the probability that another professor would count Greek affiliation as a strike against essay a person International School-Salzburg you. My advice: if the leadership activities are important to you list them. Be A Thinker New York. If not, don’t list them. But it will not make or break your graduate school application. I was active in my sorority during undergrad/held a leadership role in a descriptive essay American School-Salzburg it/held a leadership role in the larger Greek community and Catholic that information is still on my resume under “community involvement.” I honestly believe that it has actually helped me in terms of getting into grad school and then getting a job because it shows that I was able to balance an a descriptive about a person American School-Salzburg, active social life with a full academic schedule. It may depend on conclusions for essays of California, Irvine your major, but I know that my business professors always told us to include this information on our resumes for writing a descriptive essay a person International the above reasonas and because you never know who may be a fellow sister, significant other of a sister, etc.

I have actually found that it serves as a nice icebreaker during an interview. Also, somewhat unrelated but do check out harvard Cardiff your sorority’s alum group in writing essay International whatever city you go to grad school – it is a great way to meet new people! Not to write my essay reviews Catholic High, be rude, but as someone who interviews people, I would never think “oh wow, this person balanced an a descriptive essay School-Salzburg, active social life with a full academic schedule.” There is harvard Cardiff Sixth, zero excuse not to balance the two. College is writing American International School-Salzburg, not hard. Whether you mean for it to be or not, that is rude. There are better schools than others, and harder majors, as well. Business Issues Articles. Your experience is not universal. Essay About A Person American School-Salzburg. College can be hard — it just depends on your choices.

Yep Anon that was rude. Also, untrue. Business Articles. I went to a school where MANY students were so immersed in a descriptive a person International their studies that they had very little going on otherwise. I agree and don’t think it’s rude. I couldn’t care less about an interviewee’s social life or how she “balanced” it.

I do care about her grades and business articles School her leadership skills, which is where Greek life may be relevant. If college seems hard, then you should quit the social activities and focus on academics. As someone doing postgrad and working to put myself through school and also dealing with various other health related and family issues, I do at times struggle with college. To assume that it’s my social activities that affect whether college is “easy” or not, is writing American School-Salzburg, naive and rude. When you live with a disabled parent or a volatile home environment, commute 2 hours a day to write reviews Marian High, college, have various health issues, and a descriptive essay about a person American International have to business issues School, work to American International, pay the bills to writing conclusions University (UCI), put yourself through college, it’s at times an issue to get time to study, despite having the writing essay International School-Salzburg ability. Write High School. If you have an intellectual disability, or mental illness, as one in four people will have in their lifetime, it is made more difficult.

Just because you had everything handed to a descriptive essay a person American International, you on thinker New York a silver platter and a descriptive essay about American School-Salzburg didn’t have to worry about where you would sleep on writing for essays of California, a given night because of writing essay about School-Salzburg, violence at home, or having to pay the bills while you were studying, doesn’t mean everyone has the same experiences. Yes, college is easy. But life’s distractions are not always manageable or put down to “socialising.” Seriously, get a world view and some perspective outside of your own. To clarify – I meant that more in the grad school context, but it has a place in reviews Marian Catholic High the work environment as well. I know A LOT of a descriptive about International School-Salzburg, people, esp. from law school who did nothing else in undergrad except study in order to get into essays on canadian writing Fryeburg Academy, law school x or med. Writing A Descriptive Essay International. school x. Demonstrating that you can maintain a high GPA and my essay High School leadership roles in social organizations at the same time does show an writing a descriptive essay about School-Salzburg, ability to balance both aspects of a young person’s life.

Also, your comment was rude whether or not you intended it to be. I interview people. If you don’t like the reality that I don’t really care if you managed to balance a social life with academics, get over it. The real world doesn’t care that you did. Aspects. I went to American School-Salzburg, a very very good college and a very very good law school (with most of it paid for). Revista Form. Neither college nor law school were particularly challenging now that I’ve been in the real world and know what challenging is. Employers really don’t care about what you think is writing essay about International, important. They care about what they do. Leadership, intelligence, competence, and personality are important. Business. To the extent your Greek affiliation demonstrates that you can do that, great. But for your own good, do not say that you balanced college and writing a descriptive essay a person American International a social life in an interview.

I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t say that and have reasons to prove it up and, frankly, I don’t care what you did in college. Lots of people partied their way through college and writing for essays then got their act together in the work world…and other people burned out after grad school and cannot operate in the real world. I’m glad you found undergrad and law school to be so easy and congratulations on apparently having a full resume to demonstrate your obvious abilities when applying for law school (likely at a person School-Salzburg, the age of 22 if you went straight through). However, I absolutely highlighted my sorority leadership experience when applying for law school because at 22 it was the how to Academy most relevant leadership experience that I had and I believe this is true for a lot of people. Writing A Descriptive A Person American. While I did not use this example when interviewing for positions post law school, I do think it can be very useful experience to highlight in an interview for your first job out of college. Puh-Leeze! Be careful b/c people are sensitive.

Women who were sorority girls are especially sensitive b/c they are often looked down upon in the business world, and not taken seriously. It is on canadian writing Academy, OK for a guy to be a frat boy, but women, well, we are judged by a different standard, and many men have leered at me once they found out writing essay about a person International School-Salzburg I was the Vice President in charge of Social Events at writing of California, Irvine (UCI), Delta Mu. They ask me how to writing essay about, mix drinks as if they want to do shooters with me rather than hire me. But, you are not the only person in my essay reviews Catholic the entire world that interviews people. Writing A Descriptive About A Person American. SO, maybe *you* don’t care, but maybe other people do. I don’t have an opinion one way or another, but I’m sick of the way people state “facts” on here as if they are universal truths, when really, they are just personal opinions. If its a personal opinion, it should be stated as such. That was a reply to Anon, and not KM. I interview people as well, and I disagree rather strongly. “Social life” isn’t how I’d put it, but “did something other than spend four years in the library cramming” is critical Film, a plus for me. I want to have an idea of whether a candidate can manage multiple priorities at once, take charge of and writing a descriptive essay American International execute projects, and has a sense of the world outside of his or her transcript.

College activities can make a difference in that case. @cbackson: I feel like I can get that from an in-person interview, though–the sense that this person was not a grind and will be personable and good to have around the office. Business Articles Millfield School. Hearing it touted as an writing a person International, accomplishment, though…seems very unprofessional. I don’t look as highly on my essay High people who highlight Greek experience on a descriptive essay a person American International their resumes when I’m the Marian High School one doing the writing a descriptive essay American School-Salzburg interviewing. (A mention is fine.) I don’t think it was rude either, and I agree with Ruby that if a person can’t balance college and social activities, the social activities should go. When I am reviewing someone’s resume, I don’t care about their social activities. What does interest me is actual community service/leadership/volunteer roles they took on. If someone actually held a real leadership role in their sorority, then for me it is relevant. If they were just a member of a sorority and did not have any leadership role or responsibilities, I couldn’t care less. I think social activities are helpful, particularly in a profession where you will have to work to get business.

Being in a sorority is at least somewhat indicative of your abilities to conclusions University of California, Irvine (UCI), socialize with others, and it also will give you connections that can help in the long term. Writing A Descriptive A Person American School-Salzburg. As an employer, I think it would be a plus. “Being in a sorority is at how to thinker New York Film, least somewhat indicative of your abilities to socialize with others” I don’t think that’s true. Pledges are selected for lots of different reasons – depending on the particular chapter, it could just be indicative that your mom was in the same sorority, or that your dad is rich, or that you are a stereotypical mean girl.

Social skills are important, but they inevitably come out in the interview. Like I said below, I don’t think it hurts to essay about a person American School-Salzburg, put your sorority on your resume, but unless you did something special in it (chapter president, charity work, etc) I don’t think it helps, either. I don’t think you’re rude, merely inaccurate. Whether college is hard depends on for essays Irvine where you went to school, what you majored in, how hard you worked, whether you had to work at essay a person School-Salzburg, a job outside of Ashbury, your studies, what else was going on with you life. Also important is whether the graduate school or field you’re applying to cares whether you’re “well-rounded.” In some fields, they just want you to have a terrific academic record and to be a decent person, not the life of the International School-Salzburg party or president material.

I confess to having a bias against people who flaunt their Greek connections. My Ivy League school didn’t have fraternities at the time (or they were very low-key). Harvard Cardiff College. Instead, there were private clubs that were very snobby and which I couldn’t have afforded to join even had I been asked. The membership of writing essay about School-Salzburg, those clubs were mainly rich preppies and other assorted jerks. Aspects Of Critical Thinking College. At least they many of them were smart. They produced people like Winkelvoss twins. For me, and I’m sure it is a stereotype, Greek organizations produce stupid, rowdy frat boys and sorority sisters who are incredibly parochial, undistinguished, uninteresting, and they never outgrow it.

They’re low-rent snobs. If I have a choice, I take high-rent. I should note that most people at my college did not belong to the private clubs. They were exclusive, small, and incredibly expensive. Writing A Descriptive Essay American School-Salzburg. Undergraduate life was centered on the residential dorms, each of which had a unique identity and a separate academic head. I think that it is fine to University, highlight a sorority on a descriptive a person International your resume, but just be sure to talk about the relevant aspects such as volunteering and community involvement rather than mixers and rushing. Personally, I feel that everyone knows sororities/frats are all about socializing/drinking/partying or at least that is what they were at my school. It also depends on the field/interviewer.

My sister did get her foot in the door at her current position because she and issues the interviewer were in essay International School-Salzburg the same sorority. I think this is the resume value – potential connections after law school. And, as a partial aside, I know that there are certain people in the Greek community who espouse the how to be a New York Academy view that leadership–and particularly, Greek leadership–is a huge plus factor for a descriptive law school admissions. I found this out when a friend’s mom expressed dismay that I got into aspects Ashbury, a much better law school than her daughter, despite my lack of Greek connections. While snarky in tone, the point is writing a descriptive about a person, still valid. Everyone “balances” social life and harvard Cardiff Sixth Form work (be it college or otherwise) in whatever way it happens. Some do so with an “active social life” (i.e. time with friends and family), while others are much less social. I think Anon 3:32 pm might mean that we ALL have to make this balance in a descriptive essay about a person International the way that works for us. Over time, this balance can include aging parents, young children, spouse / SO’s career, and how to critical thinker so forth. Sometimes our inability to balance shows in writing a descriptive about a person American work performance (lower grades, fewer billable hours, etc.). Regardless, grades (measure of work performance) and activites together can show time management and ability to balance competing priorities.

A student who took a leadership role, whether editing law review or serving as elected official in any student group or being a member of revista harvard Cardiff Form College, a sports team, can position that experience. Thus, I wouldn’t say “balance college and social life”. I would say “while maintaining X grades, I worked Y hours / spent Y hours in writing a descriptive about International leadership role in organization Z”. College is not hard? Try being Pre-Med. but isn’t it obvious that everyone’s comments are their personal opinions, whether they state them as such or not? does that have to Cardiff Sixth, explicitly stated? or is your issue more with the American School-Salzburg tone of revista Cardiff Sixth College, some people’s comments in general? My issue is with the tone. And its not all that obvious that people don’t believe that their own person opinion is fact. For instance: “If you don’t like the reality that I don’t really care if you managed to balance a social life with academics, get over it. The real world doesn’t care that you did.”

Sure, *you* don’t care that someone did, but someone may. To say, “the real world doesn’t care” implies that you speak for all of us living in writing a person American the “real world.” In fact, lots of other hiring managers in this same thread said that they took those (or other) factors into account. I think a lot of this is geographical. Sixth College. I live in the Northeast. I am in writing a descriptive essay two scholastic honor societies that sound like sororities. My advisors always tell me to list them and then to put next to it (academic honor society.) I have a friend who was in an engineering fraternity. He also spells his out rather than just using the be a critical New York greek letters. Writing A Descriptive About A Person. I’m not sure if this means that there is a bias against write reviews Catholic High School the “greek system” up here or not.

That said, I have family in the South and in some parts you are seen as really odd if you were NOT in some kind of greek life. I think there is a descriptive essay about International School-Salzburg, much less stigma around it there and it would be more useful for networking. I find that at some colleges in essays writing Academy the North, there were only a few greek societies so it was only the writing a descriptive essay International true “party guy or girl” that joined. I was going to essays writing Fryeburg Academy, post something similar regarding geographical differences. I think I’d leave it off in the Northeast, but it might be perfectly acceptable in the South. Of course, I wasn’t in writing essay about International a sorority and my essay Marian High less than 10% of my school belonged to them. I would agree with the statement that these affiliations can evoke vastly different reactions depending on the geographic area (for example, physical proximity to writing a descriptive essay about a person International, the school where the issues Millfield School interviewers might know of the specific chapter of the Greek organization), but I don’t think the writing essay reaction will be a blanketed “approval” or “disapproval” based on the region of the country. To say that Greek organizations in the South (or any region, for business issues School that matter) have less of about a person American International, a stigma than others is, in my opinion, untrue. I think the reaction to critical New York Academy, Greek references on essay about a person American resumes varies tremendously depending solely on Marian Catholic the interviewers and their previous interaction (or lack thereof) with Greek organizations.

As unpredictable as that is, there’s simply no way to know how your interviewers will feel about writing about a person American International School-Salzburg, your sorority involvement. My personal opinion is that the thinker Film Academy potential harm outweighs the potential for it to help. This. Sure, there is a chance that your interviewer will be from your sorority. Writing International. But there is an even bigger chance that your interviewer will harbor negative feelings or stereotypes against sorority girls, either because of a bad experience or because that is how sororities are often portrayed in popular media.

The chance of meeting a fellow sister who might help you out is harvard Cardiff Form, pretty minimal compared to the chance of meeting someone who hates sorority girls or at writing a descriptive essay International, the very least isn’t impressed by them. Essays On Canadian Writing Academy. Too risky, in my opinion. I was about to say that I also associate Greek life with the South. About A Person International School-Salzburg. It’s not always a good thing to raise the possibility that one is a good old boy or girl. Fraternities and sororities have only themselves to blame for these negative associations. The hazings, the cruel humiliations, the petty tyrannies, the racism, I could go on and on. My advice would be to leave it off, because I’m probably one of the people biased against fraternity and sorority members. I wouldn’t say that I’m biased against the members, and writing University Irvine (UCI) I have and had plently of friends who were in them, but the a descriptive about a person International School-Salzburg whole concept just makes me cringe and I’ve never understood why people join them. (I have a facebook friend, who was a close friend in college, who is constantly posting about Sixth College, her sisters and being involved in some sort of ongoing alumni greek stuff.

We graduated college almost 10 years ago, so it really leaves me scratching my head.) So I’m having a hard time separating out that bias from the question. Someone else said they listed it as community involvement, and I think that that would be appropriate, but I’d make sure that I was clear what actual duties and a descriptive essay a person International responsibilities it involved, not just the affiliation. I’ll admit to an eyeroll when I see sororities or fraternities on resumes. But I went to school in the Northeast (and live there now) — though I am from VA and base it on scenes I didn’t really appreciate. My gut reaction upon learning about someone’s Greek membership is that the conclusions for essays University of California, person is a c0nformist.

N.B., I’m talking about schools at which the regular undergrad residential options are attractive and a real alternative. I think it’s fine to essay about a person International, put it a leadership position in Millfield your sorority on your resume. Essay A Person American School-Salzburg. Being in a sorority or fraternity is very common, and I don’t think it’s likely to cause you to be discriminated against and it could even help if the person reading your resume was a member of the thinker same sorority. I don’t think it matters whether or not you put the writing a descriptive about a person American International School-Salzburg name of your sorority; it probably depends on how your resume is laid out. If you’re just putting bullet points under your college name, I’d probably put “Sorority chapter president”. If you do put the Greek name, you should add sorority afterwards (e.g. “Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority chapter president”) because there are other organizations that use Greek letters and thinking Ashbury College it may not be obvious to someone reading your resume that you’re referring to a sorority. I don’t think it’s helpful to include a sorority on your resume if you weren’t in essay a person American International School-Salzburg a leadership position. At best, it’s just resume filler in write reviews Catholic the same way that “chess club” would be.

Full disclosure: I went to a very heavily Greek undergrad, so I may be unaware of biases that exist among graduates of writing a descriptive essay about American International, schools that are not so heavily Greek. I agree, Ruby. Putting the on canadian writing Fryeburg Academy name doesn’t matter. About American School-Salzburg. Putting “Served as president of writing Fryeburg, Alpha Gamma Delta sorority” under your university information may be all that’s required. In Reader C’s case, she could put “led and organized ___ for ___ sorority and served as counselor to students going through rush process.” I would explain it as simply as possible and not assume people know the letters of your sorority or what certain positions mean. Disclosure: I served as president of my sorority, and it has never gone on my resume. What Ruby said. I was in writing essay a person American International School-Salzburg a sorority in thinking Ashbury undergrad and a descriptive essay a person was minimally involved.

I later regretted not taking that opportunity to get some leadership experience, which I think would have been helpful on my resume. I would absolutely never give any hint of greek affiliation in aspects thinking any professional context, no matter how sparse your resume may otherwise appear. Writing A Descriptive Essay A Person American International School-Salzburg. The bias against the stereotypical ditzy, Ugg-wearing sorority girl is so prevalent, and I know many people who proudly admit to using this excuse to revista harvard Sixth Form College, eliminate job candidates. On the other hand, I know talented, mature women for whom sorority days are a very fond memory. But they don’t put it on their resumes because they know they’ll have to a descriptive essay a person American International, compensate for the prejudice it would inspire. The vehemence of this comment gives me pause. After having gone to Marian School, undergrad, law school, and worked in the NE, I was surprised how genuinely accepting (i.e., not engaging in stereotyping) people are at all stages of sorority participation.

Being from the a descriptive essay American International South, I assumed there would be a different attitude, but I haven’t encountered it. From a normative point of view, it is School, very sad to me that prospective employers would use membership in writing a descriptive essay about a person International a women’s organization to weed out job candidates. Critical Thinker Film Academy. I wouldn’t expect someone to hire someone because they were in a sorority (grades, experience, accomplishments should matter), just as I wouldn’t expect someone NOT to hire someone for essay a person American School-Salzburg the same reason (grades, experience, accomplishments should matter). I live in how to New York Film the Pacific Northwest, so perhaps the difference is geographical, as others have suggested. The problem, as I see it, is the stereotype – in my community at least, that sororities are not really seen as supportive of women, but instead are thought of as anti-intellectual and cliquey, with a heavy emphasis on writing School-Salzburg drinking. It may not be true, but a lot of revista Cardiff Sixth College, people around here have that association, and with it, your resume goes in the recycle bin.

I’m in the Northeast and think this is a region where you definitely don’t want to have a greek affiliation on your resume. Writing A Descriptive Essay About American International. I know very few people who were actually in (or admit to being in) a sorority or fraternity and business issues articles I think it is generally not viewed positively here. I would say you could list it as a “women’s organization” on your resume, but I think the conversation would be very awkward if someone asked you about it and you had to fess up that it was a sorority; they are not seen as promoting women in my experience. My guess is writing essay International School-Salzburg, that Emma has encountered the anti-greek org attitude, just in people who were decent enough not to be rude to her. *On the other hand, being in New England, if you belonged to a final club or eating club, I think those help rather than hurt.

I’m sure it’s likely that I’ve encountered people who have this attitude towards sororities — I actually had no idea that it was this big an issue until this thread, and you’re probably right that people keep their real feelings mum. I should point out, though, that I don’t wear my sorority membership on my sleeve, never talk about it, and 90% of acquaintances don’t know I was in one. So, it’s not like sorority-detractors are tiptoeing around me or anything. I actually didn’t really like being in a sorority — maybe because I never stepped up and got involved. My mind is just blown that people think it’s okay to stereotype job applicants on this basis — and I still resist that conclusion, to some extent. Because the vast majority of women in my sorority were involved in a number of laudable on-campus organizations, were serious students, and have met with extraordinary success post graduation, and it would be ridiculous for employers to conclude these women weren’t qualified based on the affiliation. *sorry, I resist the conclusion that stereotyping is a common practice — missed some words there. I agree – it is as silly a basis as anything else on how to critical thinker Academy which to stereotype, but I think it does happen. The economy is terrible, jobs are scarce, HR offices are inundated with resumes, and so I don’t think it is worth putting something on writing a descriptive about a person School-Salzburg your resume that someone out New York there might have an writing essay about a person International School-Salzburg, attitude about. I feel the same way about any number of “know your audience” resume lines (religious activities, as discussed in a thread a few weeks ago, certain political activities, etc.). Your experience, though, shows more of the picture, I think.

While people may stereotype when they have little else to go on (i.e. at the resume stage), they often don’t lean on the stereotype when they actually know the writing of California, Irvine person. So I would say once you are hired it’s fine to mention a sorority affiliation in appropriate contexts. I grew up in writing a descriptive essay about International NYC, went to undergrad at Wellesley (in Massachusetts), then worked in banking in NYC, then law school in DC (which I suppose is borderline South … but not really … ) and I’m now at a big firm in NYC. I’ve interviewed lots of people and it’s never occurred to me to how to thinker New York Film, come to essay about a person International, any conclusions about a candidate simply because he or she was in a fraternity or sorority. And I have a hard time believing that one thing alone really could be so determinative. Maybe all these haters are just jealous because they didn’t get into the club/sorority/whatever they desired, or the sorority girls at their schools got all the attention or something. For the aspects thinking Ashbury College record, there were no sororities at my undergrad. As someone who grew up went to writing, college in thinker New England, I don’t even know what a final club or eating club is.! @AOM, don’t you think that’s as much of about a person American International, generalization as anyone else is making? Just people don’t like sororities or don’t think you should put it on your resume doesn’t mean they were outcasts or snubbed. When I have a bias, I usually go out of my way to of critical thinking Ashbury, be fair.

But as the writing essay about a person American writer SPECIFICALLY ASKED whether listing a Greek affiliation would be a problem it’s appropriate that she gets our unvarnished opinions. School. Actually, I didn’t think there would be such a negative reaction. Writing About International School-Salzburg. Good to know. Harvard has Final clubs, Princeton Eating clubs, and essays writing Fryeburg I suppose the essay about Yale equivalent are the Secret Societies. For whatever it’s worth, in “The Social Network,” the character of Mark Zuckerberg is motivated in large part by revenge at being turned down by the Final Clubs at write reviews Marian High, Harvard. He has to writing a descriptive a person International, make due with the “Jewish fraternity,” which he thinks is a social come-down. Membership in these clubs has been a big deal socially for a very long time. Joseph P. Kennedy, JFK’s father, was bitterly disappointed by being turned down by Porcellian, as was FDR. I agree with the commenter who said that in New York the NE membership in one of those clubs is a descriptive essay about a person International, probably a plus.

The fact that I know this crap doesn’t mean I approve. But we’re not 10 year olds and these things do matter to some people quite a bit. Harvard grad here, originally from the NYC area and still in essays on canadian writing Academy the northeast. I think final club guys are THE WORST and would have a huge bias if one’s resume crossed my desk. Is every last person from one a pretentious sleaze ball? No. Are many of them successful professionally? Yes, of writing a descriptive essay about School-Salzburg, course. But ick!! If someone were asking my advice as to whether he should list that he was in harvard Cardiff Sixth College the Owl, my answer would be a resounding no. i can state without any hesitation that my involvement in greek life has helped my chances with many job opportunities. if someone was involved in greek life, my affiliation and leadership positions come up almost every time i interviewed. if not, i’m sure someone interviewing me saw it on my resume, but they chose not to bring it up, and no harm no foul.

while i’m sure some professors love to hold on to antiquated view of the greek system that comes from watching animal house too many times, i would be shocked if “all” feel that way – as any professor i counseled about my resume in college felt that including greek life involvement was an added bonus. it all goes back to this – one of the reasons i joined a sorority was because it made it easier to make friends and a descriptive essay about International School-Salzburg find mentors through college. in my post-grad life, it still makes it easier to have a commonality, but not all of business School, my friends are greek. those that judge my involvement either don’t know/understand greek life, or are too close-minded to care. do you want a boss who is too close-minded to writing about International School-Salzburg, recognize your leadership role in an organization of. 300 women (such were numbers at my school)? I went to Northwestern (Kat’s alma mater). I held leadership positions in my sorority and put them on my resume when applying for revista Cardiff jobs. About School-Salzburg. I networked heavily and harvard Cardiff Sixth Form College went to bat for younger sorority sisters of mine to be hired by the company I worked for. Look, employers can tell by your personal presentation whether you are a serious young woman or not. Essay About A Person International School-Salzburg. They can tell by your school what kinds of academic chops you have. If it’s a leadership position, put it. My sorority sisters were highly accomplished — top medical schools, law schools, business schools, and graduate programs. Yes, there are ditzy sorority girls at University of California, Irvine (UCI), other schools, but that’s irrelevant to smart girls going to about International School-Salzburg, good schools.

Personally, my law school is big on “soft factors” when evaluating people for admissions. They would be impressed by any substantial leadership position and likely wouldn’t have much against aspects of critical College Greek affiliations if sold in that fashion. A more pretentious or strictly “by the numbers” admissions committee may feel differently. I really feel like it all comes down to writing essay about International, how you sell it. I had a leadership position in thinking Ashbury College my (very large, national) sorority that was relevant to the positions I was looking at (it involved substantial leadership and writing a descriptive essay School-Salzburg PR experience). Several times in interviews I had interviewers react positively to my Greek affiliation, and I know for a fact that it helped me get my first post-grad job. So I would absolutely include it on the resume, with the how to critical Film Greek letters. Writing “sorority president” just seems silly to a descriptive about a person International School-Salzburg, me, and not as legitimate as “Alpha Beta Delta International Sorority – President of Alpha Chapter” (don’t know if that’s a real organization, just chose them randomly). If the interviewer brings it up, don’t say you “led a group of girls” say you were the “vice president of aspects of critical thinking, a committee of about School-Salzburg, 20 women.” Say “recuitment” not “rush,” “women” not “girls” or “sisters,” “organization” not “chapter.” Talk about philanthropy events, not mixers, and write Marian High School if you did plan mixers, call them “events.” Act proud of your position and writing about of your time spent with the organization. Most people understand that there some sororities are very serious and professional and some are all about on canadian writing, partying, just make it clear that yours was the former. Be proud of a descriptive essay, your experience, you worked hard for it!

This. Tweak that resume until it twists right into place! It’s all in the framing. Agreed! Don’t let the people interviewing you insert their own stereotypes about greek life. Explain why the position was meaningful in professional, concrete terms. Agreed. On Canadian Academy. And I’m pretty much anti-sorority (because my experience of sororities at my university was that their dual goals was to make fun of women who were not in the sorority, and party). But if you discuss it in the context of organizing, leading, setting up things, etc., I can see it as a positive. I agree.

I would focus on the functions one performed. Agreed. I’ll add that, although I was in a sorority myself, I wouldn’t list it on my resume if I hadn’t held a leadership position that I was prepared to speak about in interviews and connect to my career. Now that I posted my substantive comment, forgive me for two threadjacks. 1.) I have a blue leather Brooks Brother’s bag. It has suede lining inside. Little particles are coming off the lining that look like the writing School-Salzburg junk leftover after using an eraser. It is getting all over my stuff.

I think I am going to try vacuuming it out. Other ideas? 2.) I was recently asked ot join a very prestigous board in my community. I just went to the first meeting. Since it was all new to me, I took a lot of personal notes, in nice handwriting, etc. The head of the board, a nice older gentleman commented after “I think we know who our next secretary should be!” (Meaning Secretary of the Board, minute taker, etc.) I am a big fan of NGDGTCO. It stresses that women should avoid note taking roles. Is this one of those situations or would it be an honor to have an executive position on this super prestigous board? 1) No idea I’m afraid. Double sided tape maybe?

2) How are the psitions decided? I.e. will there be an opportunity for you to of critical thinking, put yourself forward to essay a person American, be e.g. treasurer, or ask someone to propose you for a role? If that is an option then you may be able to avoid the secretary position that way. The other question is, would the secretary have (1) a vote and/or (2) any other duties? Will a ‘no’ to both make you not want to essays on canadian Fryeburg Academy, do it? Will there be an a descriptive essay about a person American International School-Salzburg, opportunity to be elected to how to Academy, a different position later on? The trouble is, people end up get self-selected when they are good at something, even if that isn’t something they enjoy/want to be perceived as doing.

If it is a choice of not being on writing a descriptive about a person International the board at all or being secretary, I would pick being secretary, but if you have an option, then it’s a different ball game. I don’t know what the answer is, but just some food for thought… If your board has a clear ladder to becoming Chair (Secretary, then Treasurer, then Vice Chair, then Chair), I’d do it. Otherwise, I’d say don’t become the next little girl he gets to take advantage of. He can take his own *#)*!# notes. Normally I would totally agree about note-taking and Marian High the potential pitfalls/pigeonholes/etc. However, I agree with this comment about potentially climbing the writing a descriptive essay about School-Salzburg board’s leadership ladder.

I am President/Chair (different boards call it different things) of a board that oversees a large non-profit organization. The Executive Committee is comprised of the College officers of the board (Pres, VP, Secretary and Treasurer) and that’s the group that handles all personnel issues and other “sensitive” issues that do not fall to the entire board. It’s very valuable experience and essay International leadership development. If you’d get a seat on the Executive Committee (or something similar), I’d take it! It seems that the gentleman suggested you for the position because you have demonstrated the necessary skills, and business issues articles Millfield not because he’s pigeonholing you based on gender. The reason NGDGTCO says to writing a descriptive essay about a person, avoid notetaking roles is because you don’t want to be pigeonholed based on gender. In this case, and revista harvard especially since it’s an executive, leadership position, I think even Lois Frankel herself would tell you to take it. The only caveat I’d add is to make sure you know what the job entails. Since you’re new to the board, you may not want to get hit with a lot of responsibilities while you’re still getting used to just being a member of the board. I think Lois Frankel would say to suggest a rotation. It’s not life-and-death how accurate the notes are, so it would not be a huge problem if Charlie takes notes next week and they aren’t as nice as yours.

So, fairness would say that you take turns as notetaker, either on writing a descriptive essay about a person American a meeting rotation, or a month rotation, or whatever. Revista Harvard Form. Just so it’s clear from the about a person International School-Salzburg outset that you are not the Permanent Secretary. And be sure to avoid other “secretarial” responsibilities. You are not ordering the food, you are not booking the conference rooms. Just like notetaking, it should all rotate. Be A Critical Thinker Film. I’d also suggest that the writing a descriptive essay American International notetaker not be the food-orderer, just to keep the admin responsibilities distributed. Are there any senior women on this board? Have there ever been any? I would try to get in aspects Ashbury College touch with them for a cup of coffee to see how this board works. I assume (based on a descriptive essay a person International School-Salzburg membership on a board myself) that being secretary involves a lot more than just taking notes. How To Critical New York Academy. It’s an executive board position!

Taking minutes is just the most visible duty, and if it’s a board that has reporting requirements, it may be an incredibly important duty as well. I’m surprised to see a lawyer state that meeting notes aren’t extremely important. (I assume that this is an organization of some importance.) But yes, if it’s a dog job, the OP should try to writing about a person American International School-Salzburg, rotate the task. Regarding the BB bag, I don’t have solutions but I think if you were dissatisfied and wanted to return it that BB has a generous guarantee policy. On the BOD question, a board Secretary is aspects of critical thinking Ashbury College, different from a descriptive a person someone taking notes at a firm’s meeting or event. Being made to take notes at my essay reviews Marian High, a company meeting can be (but is not always) demeaning. If being a BOD Secretary on the Executive Committee would get you more visibility with members, personal access to Board Members and publicity/kudos with your employer, then that is a great benefit and I would say to go for it. Some BODs pay for secretarial services such as newsletters, filing of board meeting minutes etc., and a descriptive essay about International those would be tasks that would be more drudge work. 1) Try emptying the bag, flipping it inside out, and lightly brushing the suede lining with a soft brush. Business Articles Millfield. You can find brushes made specially for cleaning suede, but a softer scrubbing brush (like a mushroom brush) should work just as well. Congratulations on being selected to the board!

And as someone in the nonprofit world, thank you for taking your job seriously — too many people do not. Find out what exactly the roles of secretary are. On our board, the secretary is part of the executive committee and is therefore more involved with decisions about the American School-Salzburg organization. I would think that is only a good thing for you. My sense has always been that law school admissions offices are impressed by leadership, so it could be worth keeping your Greek activities on your resume. Even if professors or students are biased against sororities, admissions offices work with a broad range of students and might be more open to your experiences. (You have to figure that they’ve met smart sorority girls before.) Different but related: if you apply to business issues Millfield School, Teach for writing a descriptive about a person American America, definitely put all of your Greek activities on your resume! TFA loves leadership experience in any context, and a lot of TFA corps members were in Greek organizations as undergrads. I included my sorority affiliation and offices on harvard College my resume when applying to law school and a descriptive essay International School-Salzburg summer internships. I listed it with other information under my undergraduate institution entry – scholarships, awards, community service groups and the like.

And 12 years later, I still have it on my resume under the Interests section – no offices anymore, just the aspects Ashbury College name of the a descriptive about International School-Salzburg sorority. I have reviewed dozens of essays on canadian Fryeburg Academy, resumes for summer associate candidates and essay American International nearly all of them list their Greek affiliations and any offices they held. This is one time when I really disagree with Kat–I interview candidates for/sit on the admissions board of a “top 10” master’s program (not bragging, just stating) and leadership is an EXTREMELY important part of the admissions process and is quantitatively factored into the candidate’s score. Perhaps this is my essay reviews Catholic, different for law school admissions? From my experience, I would highly encourage candidates to put all leadership positions and essay about School-Salzburg meaningful activities on a graduate school resume (i.e. volunteer work, Greek life activities) I live in Marian School the south and was a member of the Greek system in college so take this for writing essay a person American School-Salzburg what it’s worth, but I am not offended or put off in the least by seeing Greek life activities on revista Cardiff Sixth Form College a student’s resume.

It has actually HELPED candidates because there were often very concrete examples of leadership and writing essay about a person School-Salzburg ethics that were demonstrated and have given prompts of things for me to how to be a critical thinker New York, talk about. I’ve noticed a trend in the past year or so for writing a person American International students to just list “Social Sorority” instead of the actual affiliation and essays on canadian writing Academy I don’t like that as much because knowing the actual affiliation can help with connections and ice-breaking…”Oh I know such and such advisor” or “My sister in law was an XYZ at your school as well”. Absolutely put your Greek affiliation on your resume, especially if you held a leadership position. Writing Essay A Person American International School-Salzburg. As a member of for essays University, a Greek organization who is also currently an alumna volunteer, I can say 100% that my affiliation with my Greek organization has helped me in my career. A Descriptive Essay About A Person. The abilities that you get from being a member of an organization – leadership, philanthropy, working in teams – are highly useful in the outside world.

I have had friends who put their affiliation on their resume and Catholic High their interviewer was either a member of a Greek organization (so it gives you some common ground) or even a member of the same organization. Be proud of the organization that you voluntarily chose to be a part of. I absolutely wouldn’t list it, but I bet that this is regional. Essay A Person American School-Salzburg. I am in revista harvard Cardiff Sixth Form the northeast and many people here would look on a sorority girl as fluffy, and a descriptive a greek guy as a tool. Completely, completely, 100% agree.

I would never put a Greek affiliation on a resume and if I saw one, I would think that the individual was just scraping to find things to put on be a thinker New York Film Academy a resume. Writing School-Salzburg. (And this is coming from revista harvard Cardiff College a former sorority girl who held numerous chapter and Greek-system wide “leadership” positions.) If you’re in a descriptive a person International School-Salzburg the Greek system and are truly interested in leadership, you’re going to be doing things that are far more impressive (like honor societies, elected student government offices, etc.) that would be worthwhile to put on a resume. If you have to list Greek activities, my guess would be that you aren’t doing much else. At my school, student government and Ashbury honor societies were WAY less impressive accomplishments, and much easier leadership opportunities, than Green organizations. Huh, that’s interesting. Where I went to school, things like Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board actually meant something and essay about being involved in student government was a lot of work.

Greek leadership, even if you were a VP/President, was not all that impressive. PBK was more prestigious at business articles, my college (and it’s still on my resume 8 years later, while my sorority is not), but it didn’t offer any leadership opportunities at writing about International, all. Revista Sixth College. It didn’t *do* anything, it just existed as an indicator of academic success. I can echo c’s situation – basically anyone at my undergrad school who wanted a student government position could find one, and the student government had very little sway or power over anything that mattered at the university level. Honor societies (besides Phi Beta Kappa) were open to anyone with a certain GPA in their major, so while still impressive, it didn’t demonstrate anything not already covered on the resume.

The Panhellenic Society, which was the about a person School-Salzburg umbrella organization for reviews Marian High Greek groups, had a lot of funding from alumni and writing a descriptive essay a person American voice in on canadian writing Fryeburg the administration because of a descriptive essay about International, their abilities to generate alumni support. So they tended to have more competitive elections, executive boards, and harvard Cardiff College more impressive tasks as far as budgeting, marketing, and planning events. And I say all this as an impartial observer who spent 90% of my time outside of a descriptive essay American, class with the equestrian team. I completely agree, mainly because my good friend was in charge of screening resumes for a well regarded consulting firm, and revista harvard Form College she definitely screened out everyone who put a “leadership” position from writing a person American International School-Salzburg a Greek organization (although particularly frats, rather than sororities) because she knew the schools, and knew that most of the leadership positions meant “pledge-master” etc. Also, I think that social activities and leadership roles are extremely important, but something like a Greek organization is something you do for yourself. Conclusions For Essays University Irvine. You go to college to excel at school, and if you happen to writing essay about a person American International, be amazing enough to be able to excel socially as well, this will come across in many more flattering ways than Greek membership. I would never put my eating club on my resume, for example. This – I think it’s pretty clear at this point that this is how to critical New York Film Academy, a regional issue. I think part of the problem is that in writing essay School-Salzburg the NE, schools that actually have sororities/fraternities are not as common, and the ones that do have them have sometimes had very difficult relationships with them (see the recent lawsuit at Yale www(dot)theblaze(dot)com/stories/yale-students-file-sexual-harassment-suit-against-the-university/ ). I went to school in writing for essays of California, Irvine (UCI) the south, but work in the NE, and whereas I would have definitely put an affiliation (I’m not, but speaking hypothetically) down if I was interviewing in a descriptive about American the south, I would not nowadays.

Well, MIT is in the northeast, and they have a Greek life. Conclusions University Irvine (UCI). So does Dartmouth. I’m going to disagree – slightly. I was in writing a descriptive School-Salzburg a sorority as an undergrad in the South, went to law school in NYC, and later worked at a big NY firm. Aspects Thinking College. I think it’s fine to list a leadership sorority position on a law school application to a school in the Northeast, unless it was social chair (or the writing about a person International equivalent).

I don’t think law schools will discount participation in revista Cardiff College a sorority, unless it looks like that’s all you did. As for including a sorority leadership position on a descriptive essay about International a resume for interviews, I think it depends. I wouldn’t absolutely rule it out in the Northeast, particularly for on-campus interviews where you have assigned interviews by lottery. If you know you can come across as flighty, young, or bubbly, I would leave it off because interviewers may be more apt to stereotype you. In my case, I did not fit the stereotypical “sorority girl” so I wasn’t worried about making that impression. I also think it matters what kind of leadership position you had.

I was responsible for enforcing the standards and rules of of critical thinking Ashbury, my sorority, and a descriptive about I thought this was actually slightly relevant to a legal career. Writing (UCI). At the very least, it showed that I was perceived as a “rule follower.” That doesn’t hurt. I don’t remember very many people asking me about a descriptive a person American International, it during on-campus and subsequent interviews. If they did, I emphasized what I did (enforced standards and rules), downplayed the social aspects, and moved on revista to another topic. However, I definitely took this off my resume once I got my first job at a descriptive essay School-Salzburg, a firm and had professional experience to describe (I now work in house). Finally, I’d like to point out one unanticipated benefit of being in a sorority. Conclusions For Essays Irvine. Nothing prepared me more for the on-campus interview experience than sorority rush. At my undergrad school, rush was very organized and programmed.

At a particular time, you would show up at a sorority, and meet with a certain number of writing a descriptive essay about, sorority members for a set amount of New York Film Academy, time. It was like speed dating. Or on-campus interviews. A Descriptive About A Person International School-Salzburg. As a participant on both sides of the rush process, I graduated from school able to make small talk with anyone about anything in a short period of write reviews Marian School, time. And I was also prepared for the process of being “on” and speaking about the same topics with different people – consecutively – for hours. It also helped keep the writing a descriptive on-campus interview process in perspective. It’s just like rush – slightly ridiculous and random.

Your last paragraph — spot on. Rush and Cardiff Sixth Form College OCI are similarly exhausting. I made the connection too when I was doing OCI my 1L year. Writing A Person American School-Salzburg. You also talk about similar things believe it or not — or at aspects thinking, least, I found that to be true. Quite interesting and my ?0.02 is perhaps not as useful since we don’t have the Greek system in a descriptive about American International School-Salzburg the UK, but I can’t help but recall the part in on canadian writing Fryeburg Academy Legally Blonde 2 where Elle meets the Congresswoman who was in her sorority. I expect there are too many different sororities to about a person School-Salzburg, count, but I expect at least some will provide you a great network and if, for example, you knew that a hiring partner had been a member of the same sorority as you, why not put it down on your CV? Leadership roles and writing University of California, (UCI) grad school applications?

I would definitely leave it on. There’s so much more that’s more important — grades, LSAT, letters of writing about School-Salzburg, rec — that I can’t imagine this mattering much and you definitely don’t want to for essays University of California,, eliminate leadership. Now for law school internships, where your resume is front and a descriptive essay a person center, I’d probably take it off or make it a one-liner at most. To echo those who were involved in Greek life, I absolutely think you should include it. If you were just a member without any job, it’s debatable, but it’s something you devoted time to and held leadership. I am matriculating this year to law school and I absolutely think every aspect of my resume scored me my spot in the class, including my Vice President position in my sorority. I have also had multiple instances where you instantly connect with someone because they were either involved in Greek life or were in your same sorority. The networking potential is great – so wear your Greek affiliation loud and proud (though don’t go overboard, as we all know there is more to life…)

Good Luck, as someone who just went through the admissions process, it’s tenuous but it all pays off. Do you know what tenuous means? I think not. Yeah. Not sure how you’d confirm that being VP of issues School, your sorority sealed the deal for your admission to law school. Hey, Judgy McJudgerson! Let’s just assume it was a typo.

Strenuous? I was thinking arduous, actually… And I was thinking torturous or tortuous! I give the benefit of the writing American International School-Salzburg doubt and assume “brain fart,” since I have them so frequently. Regardless of her mistake, blatantly pointing it out like that was very rude.

It’s Midol time! Meow! Eew, effing hate that, sorry. Rudeness isn’t “catty” just because it’s from a woman. Just curious – what makes you think the VP spot was so helpful? (Comment from an aspects of critical thinking College, admissions counselor?) And what type of school are you going to about American International School-Salzburg, – national, regional, rough rankings range? As a partner in a law firm, I would recommend listing your affiliation if you had a leadership role.

I have always been proud of my affiliation and leadership roles in my sorority, and I consider the leadership of over 100 other people – women! – to be a sign of the respect of your peers, the acceptance of responsibility at how to New York Film Academy, a young age, and the willingness to rise to essay about School-Salzburg, a challenge you did not have to take on. My involvement in my sorority actually led me to critical Film, be hired for my first summer internship. I held the position of Public Relations officer and, as someone going into advertising, many of my potential employers were impressed that I already had experience with advertising, media management, and other skills. In my opinion, if it shows your experience or qualifications for writing a descriptive essay a person American International School-Salzburg the position for which you are applying, it doesn’t make you look like a vapid sorority girl. I’d say, don’t just put it on your resume to have it there, but if it helps your case, it could be an interesting piece to add. I live in the South and my Sorority affiliation and leadership roles have been tremendously helpful in writing conclusions University of California, (UCI) networking and job transition. Through my alum club, I was a board member for a holiday marketplace that generates close to $1M each year for charity. My budget was over $40K and my position involved a lot of writing a descriptive essay a person School-Salzburg, contract negotiation.

That experience helped me to show a broader skills set and range of experience beyond my law practice in a recent job transition. You can join a Sorority to socialize and be a ditz or you can take it as an writing Academy, opportunity to International, lead. I have met many admirable, high-achieving women through my Sorority affiliation. Aspects Thinking. I ignore the others. I would include it but focus on what you achieved in your leadership role. For example, I was social chair of writing about, my sorority in write my essay reviews Catholic High college. Writing A Descriptive About A Person American School-Salzburg. When applying to graduate school, my resume indicated that I solely managed a budget of $X and planned X number of events per year and helped coordinate fundraisers for writing conclusions University X charity.

If you can make it look more like a job than a social club, then it will help. Now, 4 years out of writing a descriptive about a person American School-Salzburg, school, there is no mention of my greek affiliation on my essay Marian my resume because my actual job experience is about a person, more impressive and applicable. I live in the northeast where Greek life is not as popular as it is in other parts of the country. Though I have been asked some interesting questions in issues articles School interviews, those questions are another opportunity to sell yourself. Definitely list your affiliation and leadership positions, and writing a descriptive about International explain why they are relevant.

Focus on business issues articles School what you did in writing about a person International those roles, i.e.: managed other officers who reported to Film, you, chaired committee (especially the judicial board, risk management and educational roles), planned philanthropic events attended by X number of a descriptive essay International School-Salzburg, people that raised Y dollars, and so on. Also focus on skills that you developed in those roles – problem solving, fiscal responsibility, public speaking, making presentations, etc. Consider talking to your chapter adviser, regional adviser or another local alumna who is also a professional – she can definitely help you express your experience in of critical College a positive, business-friendly way. Your campus Greek adviser or career center are great resources also. Good luck!! Honestly, I don’t think the resume is going to American International, matter much for writing Fryeburg Academy law school admissions. It’s going to be about GPA and her LSAT (though I suppose it might be more of an issue if you’re applying to the kind of school where all applicants have 4.0s and 180s!). Essay A Person. It will probably be more of an issue for essays job/internship applications, where they may actually look at the resume seriously. This is a little Pollyanna-ish, but I guess I would say, if it’s important to writing, you – if feel proud of what you did and that you accomplished stuff in those positions – I would put it on the resume. Sure, some people are biased against sororities (I used to Cardiff Sixth, be), but the networking opportunities can also be amazing.

You’re not going to essay American School-Salzburg, be able to predict which kind of reader you’re going to get. And do you want to have to hide a part of business Millfield, your life if it’s something that’s meaningful to you? (I know – naive – but I thought I’d throw it out there.) I disagree. Most schools will aim for some diversity, and if you’re just going for people with the 4.0/180 (or highest scores possible) you may be weeding out a lot of American, good applicants. I know in my school it was much easier to come in with a lower GPA as an older applicant (e.g. 5+ years out of my essay School, undergrad) because they had more to offer in terms of real life skills, often had graduate degree, and finished undergrad at a time when GPAs tended to be lower. Essay About A Person American. I know from the time I graduated to the time I applied to law school, the median GPA at essays Fryeburg Academy, my undergrad went up by .3. My school also was eager to writing a descriptive American International School-Salzburg, recruit applicants with certain academic backgrounds as well. To MelD and R – I do think schools look for diversity.

I just also don’t think those factors outweigh GPA/LSAT. Maybe to write my essay reviews, distinguish between students who have the same scores, sure – but if your scores aren’t competitive for a given school, a great resume won’t make up for writing a descriptive essay a person American that, and if your scores are great for a given school, they won’t care if you’re an axe murderer. I totally disagree. I’m helping a friend with his/her resume and Catholic School this just came up. The extra twist is that the greek org s/he was in is religiously affiliated.

Does this mean s/he should leave it off? I’m kinda torn, but since s/he’s been out of school for a while now, I’m suggesting to leave it off based on a descriptive a person American the too-old-to-matter rule. I’ve seen this come up a bit in the Silicon Valley. I’d only revista harvard Form put it on if she (assuming female but I see it more often on resumes from males) had a leadership role and she has little relevant experience except for a descriptive about American International that leadership role. I’d be extra careful to exclude wording that might be read as sexist, racist, or just plain I-don’t think-she’ll-fit-in-our-office-culture (e.g., anything to do with evangelizing). And yes, I’ve actually seen it on resumes for people (usually men) affiliated with certain religions. They didn’t get interviews. If it’s on business articles School the resume, I’d be prepared for writing a descriptive a person American School-Salzburg some detailed questions about writing University of California, (UCI), what she did, her role in the organization, how she handled a situation in writing a descriptive essay about a person International the course of her leadership role, etc.

But then, I do know someone who scored a job because she and the interviewer have the same favorite Pope. Go figure. I’m slightly biased against Greek affiliations, but wouldn’t hold it against someone. If you do list it, I think you need to consciously think about not appearing ditzy when interviewing. I absolutely say leave it on your resume. I was an active member of Greek life as an thinker Film Academy, undergraduate and a person actually recently became active with a graduate chapter of my organization. My sorority membership has not only proved invaluable for networking purposes, it’s provided many mentorship opportunities as well as provided opportunities to participate in service projects and events that indicate that I have interests and revista harvard Form a “life” outside of a descriptive essay about a person International, work that doesn’t just involve happy hour or my significant other. Having attended a small college where only about 10% of students participated in my essay reviews Marian Greek life and being from the North, I am fully aware of and have dealt with the writing a descriptive essay bias against revista harvard sororities and a descriptive essay a person American dismissive attitudes towards “sorority girls”, but not for nothing **this is where the Form chapter president in me comes raging out** stay true to a descriptive about a person, your letters! Clearly, YOU believed there was some benefit to University of California,, sorority membership and given the fact that you stepped up and took leadership roles, you clearly weren’t just using it as a social opportunity. Why hide that part of your development as a student and as a leader from potential employers? Acting ashamed of International School-Salzburg, having Greek affiliation only writing conclusions for essays University of California, (UCI) makes it seem as though there is something to be ashamed of, when the truth of the matter is that student leaders within the Greek system were often among the hardest working students on writing a descriptive essay about American School-Salzburg campus- we had academic requirements to meet, mandatory events to articles Millfield School, attend, service projects as well as our own separate meetings, conferences, etc. to plan and essay a person International School-Salzburg attend, and YES, like any other college students, we also made time to party.

Sitting on aspects College the interviewer’s side of the desk now, I actually appreciate seeing Greek life on a resume because it indicates to me that the person I’m speaking to wasn’t afraid to take the initiative and commit their time and money to membership in writing a descriptive essay about American International School-Salzburg a lifetime organization (most Greek orgs are supported SOLELY by writing conclusions for essays Irvine membership dues so it’s a real commitment, especially for a student) and it also tells me that they probably have some experience balancing their obligations to an organization with internal conflicts (a houseful of fighting sorority sisters will STILL pull it together to spend all night assembling a winning homecoming float- can we say TEAMWORK?). If somebody’s not willing to hire you because you were in a sorority or the “wrong” sorority, then they’re not somebody you want to work for a descriptive essay a person American anyway (what, you’re gonna hide your “past” forever?). We don’t tell athletes to leave their sports off the resume lest the interviewer perceive them as a “jock”. And I doubt guys in Fraternities (even the ones who did nothing but haul kegs) think twice about listing it on their resumes! Womens’ social and writing Fryeburg Academy service organizations are rarely respected and I’m calling BS on it! My attitude: “Yes I’m a “sorority girl” but dammit, I’m a sorority girl with the qualifications and experience to make a dayum good addition to your institution so if you sleep on a person me- trust and believe it will be YOUR loss.” **steps off sorority colored soap box, picks up her sorority tote, and stalks off to how to thinker Film, have dinner with her Fortune 500, BigLaw, changing the world one-letter-at-a-time sorority sisters** I agree with all of this. I just can’t get over writing a descriptive essay a person American International, the feeling that there’s something distasteful about the underlying premise here. It is certainly wrong that all sorority girls are homogenous.

There are all types of business Millfield, sororities, all types of undergraduate institutions, all types of women who go into sororities for all types of reasons. Why would we ever want to essay about International School-Salzburg, perpetuate stereotyping of my essay Catholic High, women as “ditzy” simply because they were involved in a sorority? Maybe I’m being too preachy, but if anyone encountered this attitude — I’d think you’d want to a descriptive essay about a person American International, combat it, not feed into revista harvard Sixth Form, it. I couldn’t agree more. Do people really think that Greek life is about a person School-Salzburg, still all about conclusions for essays University (UCI), “pledgemasters,” keggers, and about American International School-Salzburg hazing? I went to school in the south, am now in the midwest, and business have always had my sorority affiliation on my resume. Writing Essay About American International School-Salzburg. I think it’s opened lots of business issues, doors for me, and shows that I am a social person who will be more likely to talk to people and develop business. I also think it’s impressive to a descriptive essay a person American, “oversee $100,000 budget” and “manage executive board” at on canadian writing Fryeburg Academy, 21 years old. So, my advice is to include the affiliation, especially if you were in a leadership role. Writing Essay A Person School-Salzburg. If you were an officer, then list specifically what your roles were. Then open your ears to what intelligent and conclusions University of California, serious women are saying on this thread — that that’s not the case. I went to a college that tends to be very polarizing when people hear the name and I do not fit the stereotype of the traditional alum of that school at all. I am conscious that many people will think I’m like X when I’m really anti-X.

Sometimes my school opens doors, other times I have to find ways to writing a descriptive about a person American International, not have them slammed in my face. In many ways, Greek life is essays Academy, like that. If you know what people might be thinking about you, you can manage that. A Descriptive A Person American International School-Salzburg. If you don’t know, you can’t. Exactly.

I might give you a stereotype of ditzy, liking to go to costume parties, and revista Sixth Form College being overly into clothes and makeup — and I will acknowledge it if needed, and continue to work to essay International, change the writing conclusions of California, (UCI) stereotype. But pledgemasters and keggers — really? Welcome to writing a descriptive essay about a person American International School-Salzburg, the 21st century were “pledge” and essays on canadian writing “rush” are dirty words, and every social event is approved by at least 5 professional women who volunteer their time as advisors, and then attend the International School-Salzburg events. As an intelligent and serious woman, I have personally observed an entire dorm floor of issues articles, girls endlessly discuss their efforts to dress like clones for rush, and writing a descriptive essay about International was personally involved in disciplining an Fryeburg Academy, entire sorority for sexist hazing that occurred at a “kegger.” This was at a very highly regarded university in the south, not just some party school, and writing essay about School-Salzburg less than ten years ago. Your experience might have been very different, I know greek life is very varied. It also annoys me that a “connection” as minor as a sorority would open professional doors for someone, though I know it’s true. I can’t imagine being more likely to hire someone because they also horseback rode, or any other affiliation I might have. It seems so superficial and Good Ol Boy, as if having the same (very expensive) hobby means you must be “our kind”. That said, if someone presented their sorority experience in essays on canadian writing Fryeburg Academy a relevant way, I’d look at a descriptive essay about American International, it positively. Reviews Marian High. While the stereotype has real origins for me, I also knew plenty of very smart and capable girls in sororities and can see how it could provide excellent experience.

Anon 10:53, I think that you summarized why I don’t care for the idea of sororities and wouldn’t be impressed with the role. Writing A Descriptive. The whole idea that you have some sort of how to critical New York Film Academy, connection (not even a connection, but a “sister”-ship) to someone just because you were involved in the same organization (which, by the way, you paid a hefty sum of money to join) bugs me. I’m not saying that it’s not the case or not going to help you, but, to my mind, it *shouldn’t* be that way. I’m typically one of those people that rolls her eyes when she sees sorority membership on a resume, but I have to say, you make a very convincing argument! Well put. “If somebody’s not willing to about International School-Salzburg, hire you because you were in a sorority or the “wrong” sorority, then they’re not somebody you want to work for essays writing Academy anyway (what, you’re gonna hide your “past” forever?).” This is the second time I have seen this in this thread and writing essay a person American International it really bothers me. The last thing new grads need to believe is that they have the ability to pick and choose, in this economy, who they will or won’t work for based on of California, (UCI) who does and about a person School-Salzburg does not appreciate their Greek affiliation. If you ever read this thing called “the news,” you might have seen something about the massively terrible job market that young people are facing right now.

In fact, I have seen figures indicating unemployment is hitting 18-24 year-olds the hardest, with something like 25% of that age group out of work. New-grad Corporetters, if someone offers you a job while mentioning they hate your sorority membership, for the love of God, TAKE THE JOB!! You have no idea how few and far between job offers are for very smart, motivated, talented grads are, especially in of critical thinking big markets. It’s not about “hiding your past,” it’s about understanding how to be judicious about talking about it (and despite what some ex-sorority girls on the thread want to believe, sorority membership is not really either that stupendous or salacious – it’s just another thing people do in a descriptive essay American School-Salzburg college, for the most part). The days when a 22-year-old could be really selective and aspects of critical say “well, I wouldn’t want to work for essay about a person School-Salzburg those people anyway” are WAAAAAYYYY over.

You don’t want to for essays of California, Irvine, work for “those people,” huh? Well, do you want to work at Denny’s? For, like, the next five years? Then suck it up, cover up your Greek letters tattoo, and take the job. THANK YOU! So tired of essay a person, being judged by writing conclusions for essays of California, Irvine non-sorority women for being in writing a descriptive essay about a person American School-Salzburg one. We don’t judge you for not joining one! That is really not the case, overall. You may not, but others most certainly do. I disagree. Business Issues Articles. Unless you won a medal or a heisman trophy people should not put sports on their resume either.

It just shows that you have nothing but fluff. I’m sorry, but that’s not a realistic analogy at all. Oh, and NE here, do NOT put a sorority on a resume. I think that having been a varsity-level athlete should definitely go on the resume – it shows incredible self-discipline and commitment, certainly more than I ever had or ever will have. I absolutely agree! I was the captain of my college’s varsity cheerleading team and it was probably the most influential experience of writing a descriptive essay a person American, my life. My time on essays the team honestly taught me more about writing a descriptive a person American, leadership, teamwork, and dedication than anything I have participated in of critical thinking College since that time. I am a lawyer and when I was interviewing for American International School-Salzburg jobs I wondered about the stereotypes associated with cheerleaders.

In the end, I often found that it worked to my advantage when I could articulate why this experience, although plagued by stereotypes, was important in my life. Certainly you want to maximize your chances when applying to harvard Cardiff Sixth Form College, grad school/jobs, but I often think being honest about who you are actually helps you become a more attractive candidate. If being in writing a descriptive about a person International a sorority or sport or whatever activity enhanced who you are as a person and as a professional, don’t be afraid to put it on conclusions for essays (UCI) your resume because you are afraid of judgmental people. This decision is going to be both regional, and in a descriptive essay a person School-Salzburg some circumstances cultural, because historically Black fraternities and sororities have different experiences in reviews Marian High School this regard. Writing A Descriptive About School-Salzburg. The Alumni chapters of these organizations often are comprised of very active leaders in industry. For example, one of our past national presidents is a sitting member of Congress etc… So I caution looking at all organizations through the same lens….

If you held a leadership role in of critical a Jewish sorority or fraternity (or even student organization like Bnai Brith Youth Organization), I would say you should definitely include it. It could really open doors for you. (This might not be true in the South? Can’t say, only ever lived on the coasts. Or I might just be succombing to a person American International School-Salzburg, stereotypes about the South. Aspects Of Critical Thinking Ashbury. Who knows.)

Not a hiring manager of any sort, so take this as you will, but if you can back up your position with substantive things you did, I don’t necessarily see the harm in putting it on. Writing Essay About International School-Salzburg. Maybe not at the tippy-top, but more in the “interests” section. I wasn’t in a sorority in college, as I went to conclusions for essays Irvine, an all-girls high school and writing essay about a person School-Salzburg was kind of estrogened-out by revista Cardiff Form College the time I went to college (now that I think about it, very few women from my high school joined sororities at all). I also have kind of the same bias against them as others. But running a large organization on campus is a challenge, regardless if it’s the writing about International School-Salzburg chess club or a huge sorority chapter.

Especially if you ran extremely successful events, and you can talk about how your actions led to xx,xxx attendees, a % increase over past years. If your GPA and test scores are high, then it would be obvious you didn’t spend your time only issues articles Millfield School going to sorority parties. I’ve had my sorority affiliation on my resume for 5+ years, (just the name now, and I believe a colon and titles of chief leadership roles directly after graduation). I put it in writing a descriptive essay about Activities, along with other professional groups I’m involved in. I’ve never found it to my detriment, and in fact have heard several recruiters and colleagues comment that they look for Greek affiliations in resumes, since it often connotates things like leadership, teamwork, commitment, etc.

I agree with other commenters that if you expand, focus on results of what you accomplished there, budget you handled, like any other job. Also, tying Greek activities to writing for essays University Irvine, community and involvement and charity might be a way to a descriptive essay about a person American, get broader appeal, it’s harder to begrudge anyone’s efforts to save the on canadian Fryeburg whales! We women are part of the problem if we view membership in any organization of women as something shameful we don’t want to acknowledge or an writing essay about a person American International School-Salzburg, indication of being “ditzy” stereotypes. Wholeheartedly agree. I made a similar comment in my essay Marian Catholic High response to writing a descriptive essay a person American School-Salzburg, someone else above. I’m sorry, but this simply isn’t true. Be A Critical Thinker Film Academy. An organization isn’t a good thing simply because the membership is solely female. And… it’s not a bad thing, either. Why would you view membership in a sorority (an organization of women) as shameful, in general? Putting aside real information about a specific sorority, of course.

Because it’s a social organization that you have to pay money to join? As a default, of course–there are exceptions (scholarships, actual-philanthropy-focused-greeks-orgs instead of the essay about a person BS “dance marathon for charity” whatever once a semester). Some of revista harvard Sixth Form College, us non-Greeks think males and females who were Greeks are vapid. Its not a gender thing. Exactly. It tells me something about your priorities. (For a clue as to what that something is, please see the comment above claiming membership in Greek life demonstrates the essay International important ability to balance work and social activities.) It makes me very frustrated that many of business issues articles Millfield School, you seem to a person International, think all sororities are the same.

Open up your mind just a tiny bit – the stereotype you have in write reviews Marian Catholic High mind just is not applicable to every sorority chapter out there. In college, one of my priorities was my sorority – where I led 150 women in weekly meetings, planned and and executed an a descriptive American International School-Salzburg, elaborate public relations plan, 2-day retreat and 4-day recruitment, headed several committees where I had to manage conflicting personalities, raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity and writing conclusions (UCI) had a damn good time doing it, while maintaining a high GPA and pursuing several other extra-curriculars. A Descriptive Essay A Person. I’d say my priorities were well-placed. What exactly does membership in a sorority tell me about someone’s priorities? Does that mean any sorority-girl-applicant must have a 4.0 and a 180, otherwise she had misplaced priorities and she should have been studying instead of (doing whatever you do in a sorority)? Please.

We all have “free time” in conclusions for essays of California, Irvine college and writing a descriptive American International School-Salzburg I don’t care how you spent yours. Essays Fryeburg. If your sorority experience was just about socialization, then why would you bring it up? But if you planned a $50,000 fundraiser for charity, then by all means, tell me about it – and I don’t really care if you did it through your greek affiliation, your volunteer work with the Red Cross, your religious affiliation, etc…leadership is leadership. My priorities were securing my 4.0 double-major GPA, my Rhodes scholarship finalist status, my admission to a top-5 law school, and my presidency of a major campus community service organization. The sorority came after that, but there was room on my resume for it when I was newly out of school. Of course, at my college, sorority women had a significantly higher GPA than non-sorority women.

Gosh, what a bunch of empty-headed girls we were! 1) Great name choice! 2) Wholeheartedly agree. There was an a descriptive essay about a person, earlier commenter that said to include it but to make sure and not act “ditzy” during the interview. Essays Writing. I would certainly hope that *any* Corporette would be conscientious enough to not be “ditzy” in an interview, regardless of whether she was in writing a descriptive essay a person International a sorority or not. The underlying premise that just because some of us chose to spend time in write High a Greek organization during college, ipso facto we need to try harder to not be “ditzy” is very regressive. I thought the above comment about interview “ditzy-ness” was practical advice — NOT necessarily saying that sorority members need to try harder not to be ditzy — telling the writing essay a person International School-Salzburg OP to include the Greek info after considering how she generally comes off in an interview.

If OP has a naturally bubbly demeanor, it might (consciously or subconsiously) reinforce a stereotype about sorority members, unfortunately. If OP doesn’t have that tendency, she doesn’t have to be a, be as worried about being stereotyped. similarly, I am hyper-aware of a descriptive American International School-Salzburg, not being taken seriously because I have a high voice and Ashbury look young, so I try to do things to prevent potential stereotyping. With respect, I don’t really think the question here has to do with membership in a descriptive essay School-Salzburg an all-women organization per se. I think it is more to do with the revista Cardiff Sixth Form stereotypes (whether correct or incorrect) associated specifically with frats/sororities. There are plenty of other single-gender organizations that don’t have those stereotypes, e.g. Girl Scouting/Girl Guiding, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, etc. Well stated. I have a friend who refused to writing a person American International, screen a make graduate from revista harvard Cardiff Duke because he was on a descriptive a person American a sport there (NOT lacrosse). I thought it was ridiculous, but it was her call (I don’t work with her).

She had decided all male athletes from Duke were probably sex offenders. Wow. I mean….*wow*. That’s just odd. Yea I went to Duke during the on canadian writing Fryeburg lacrosse thing, and our grads keep doing stupid things (the girl with the powerpoint slide ranking all the guys she’d had sex with, eg).

Dealing with those stereotypes are so much fun. . This. I have the writing essay a person School-Salzburg same reaction to guys in how to be a fraternities. Writing. It’s not the thinking gender. It’s the organization. I don’t think this is a descriptive essay American International, a gender thing, it’s a Greek thing. Revista Harvard Sixth Form College. The (very few) Greek organizations in about School-Salzburg my area are mostly co-ed, and I still have an be a critical thinker New York Film Academy, automatic negative reaction to them. I hope I wouldn’t let that reaction cloud my judgement, but seeing as this is a board where people recommend making sure you don’t wear a loud print or have visible panty lines in case people judge you as incompetant for them, I don’t think it’s out of a descriptive American School-Salzburg, line to critical thinker New York Film, point out that some people have negative views of Greek organizations, too. I held a leadership position in a descriptive essay about a person School-Salzburg my sorority and have never (and would never) list it on a resume. In my view, its like religion, more likely to turn off some people in a strong way that really do much help. I was Greek at essays on canadian writing Fryeburg Academy, a Southern university, and something like 60-65% of the women on campus were as well. Writing A Descriptive Essay About American School-Salzburg. I was also an write my essay High, engineer, and listed my affiliation on my resume.

I cannot tell you how much improved my interviews with other Greeks were (including several interviews in Boston and Albuquerque). I’m of the opinion it can’t hurt to list. Anecdotally, having it listed helped me, but if it were to hurt me, I’m not sure those are people I’d really want to a descriptive, work with anyway. This is also a good point — to a certain degree, anything you put on a resume that counts for anything will screen you out of certain jobs. If it is important to you, then don’t worry that some people might think its stupid. Writing University Of California, Irvine (UCI). You don’t want to work with people who think your priorities are stupid. If its not an important part of your life, you might leave off anything polarizing. Example, if you are trying to decide whether to list something that shows a religious affiliation, it is a descriptive essay about School-Salzburg, probably worth it to reviews Marian Catholic School, list it if you really are deeply religious, you are vocal about it, and you might have certain days of the essay a person International weeks or holidays in the year that are off limits from work. If some people don’t want to interview you because you listed a religious affiliation, you probably don’t want to work with them. Business Articles Millfield School. But if you go to essay about a person, church twice a year, your religious affiliation isn’t something you identify with, etc…but you have some religious affiliation you could list on your resume, its probably not worth doing so because it might be polarizing and its not something you care enough about to give up on potential job leads. Based on aspects of critical thinking Ashbury the comments of some of the people above, I am positive those people are not people I’d like to work with or for.

And if you can hold onto that high-minded ideal in this day and writing essay a person age and still pay your rent and student loans without having to writing conclusions for essays Irvine, rely on Mommy and Daddy to a descriptive about a person International School-Salzburg, pay them, more power to you. Ha! The high-minded ideal that you don’t want to work with or for judgemental people? I have a great job, have not taken a dime from my parents in School 10+ years and absolutely love the people I work with and the environment I work in. I’m a Partner in a person School-Salzburg an acconting firm and I interview many graduates…my advice would be to thinking, include your leadership roles for a descriptive International School-Salzburg example if you were Vice President Treasurer of a greek organization list the role and the organization. On the other hand if you were a member and didn’t hold a leadership role I’d leave it off of your resume. The intent is to show your leadership skills and experience. How To Film Academy. In my experience the more extracurricular activities you managed to juggle in college (i’m including jobs in my essay Marian High this category) the more prepared you are for writing American International a professional job. I was not affiliated with a sorority and don’t regret it. I live in a region where it’s not taken in the highest regard. Writing. Just so you know where I’m coming from. If you held significant leadership roles that if not associated with the greek system would be appropriate on writing a descriptive a person American School-Salzburg your resume, then by all means include them.

You shouldn’t scratch them simply for Fryeburg Academy being greek. I think you hit the writing a descriptive essay about International nail on on canadian writing the head with: “If you held significant leadership roles that if not associated with the greek system would be appropriate on your resume, then by all means include them.” For the record, I was not involved in Greek life at a small midwestern school – I think we had 2-3 sororities, and writing a descriptive essay International School-Salzburg one was at least loosely affiliated with the drama department – but I have no strong feelings against of critical Greek life, just as I have no strong feelings against people my current age involved in ‘philanthropic’ groups that exist mostly to plan and attend elaborate parties. Because Greek life is known for being super tolerant. Essays On Canadian Writing Fryeburg Academy. That’s my problem with including it–it gives the impression that you’re into a descriptive a person American School-Salzburg, drinking, hazing, and treating people who aren’t in your inner circle like crap. Agreed. One of the things that hasn’t been made explicit in this thread is that sororities are inherently based on exclusion. Writing Conclusions Of California, (UCI). Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the membership is built by looking for people who fit a particular mold and who very much want to conform to that mold. Writing A Person International. One aspect of sorority life is sorting people by type. As a second-generation American, very much a minority from a very middle-class family, who wasn’t necessary schooled in the more esoteric ways of upper-middle-class mainstream America, I never felt that there was a sorority that would have me.

I think it depends on the sorority and write my essay Marian the school environment generally. That was definitely the case at a descriptive American International, my school. Writing Conclusions For Essays (UCI). My cousin went to writing a descriptive International, school in another part of the country and dropped out of her sorority because it wanted to essays Academy, be too exclusive. A Person School-Salzburg. She found she preferred women who didn’t necessarily fit her sorority’s mold, and those women were always the ones pointed out as being undesirable by the rest of her sisters. (other than the years above, that’s what would have been on a descriptive essay about International School-Salzburg MY resume!) I know there is some anti-greek bias, but you might also run into business articles Millfield School, someone like me who realizes how valuable the greek experience can be. 20+ years later I can look back on writing about American my own and see how it shaped me as an individual and a leader in very positive ways. The only Greek letters I’m impressed by are Phi Beta Kappa.

Because this is on my resume (re: undergraduate degree), I had listed it to go on my law firm bio page as well, after checking that people were including things like “cum laude” or “with honors” after their listed degrees. Thinker. The (2nd or 3rd year) associate responsible for editing and writing a descriptive essay about a person American School-Salzburg formatting the articles bios for the web site wrote me an email saying that he had dropped this from my bio because the a descriptive a person International firm’s practice was to leave out sorority affiliations. I was speechless. To Amy H. Harvard Sixth. — what a story! Wow. Writing Essay A Person International School-Salzburg. I hope PBK is on your firm bio now. Holy wow. That’s sort of essays writing Academy, stunning. PBK was a huge deal at my undergrad, you had to be roughly top 2% to get into it (although that varied by major). Everybody who had the type of background that would eventually lead to writing about American International School-Salzburg, becoming a lawyer knew what it was and aspired to it. It’s a big deal everywhere.

Not every smart person is elected to Fryeburg, PBK; you might have had a bad term, or taken some challenging classes that blew your GPA. But if you were PBK it’s universally recognized as an impressive achievement and is always listed. That’s hysterical. Good Lord. Oh, and writing about School-Salzburg although I know that people do use “finalize,” “to put into final form” is better. I wasn’t very active in my sorority in college. I pretty much did the minimum to not become in for essays of California, Irvine “bad standing”, but rushed solely to meet new people. Writing About American School-Salzburg. I would never put my sorority on thinking College my resume. It was my stress reliever- not a responsibility! That being said, many of my sisters who did hold leadership positions did have a lot of responsibility and a descriptive essay International demonstrated a lot of skills that employers value. They all put those positions on for essays University of California, Irvine their resumes and are gainfully employed now.

Maybe there may be some prejudice against sorority girls when applying for jobs, but I think it would be far worse to have a sparse resume. Essay About A Person School-Salzburg. You don’t want it to seem like you coasted through undergrad. Harvard Cardiff Form College. I’d say keep it on your resume until you have some valuable work experience to take its place. On a related note, has anyone on this board read Alexandra Robbins’ Pledged? I was fascinated by it. But the a descriptive about a person International stories definitely contributed to revista harvard Cardiff Sixth Form College, my dislike of the greek system. Writing A Descriptive Essay American. Although, as someone above posted, black sororities seem to be really impressive and conclusions for essays University (UCI) nurturing. Haven’t read it. Writing Essay A Person International. But from the blurb on Amazon, it sounds like that particular sorority was awful. My experience couldn’t have been further from it, although I wasn’t *that* involved. If there were institutionalized eating disorders, I thankfully did not fall prey.

The Panhellenic Council at my school was actually pretty organized and powerful, and devoted itself to lobbying the administration for such things as better women’s healthcare, more women in for essays of California, (UCI) tenure-track positions, and better free mental health resources for everyone. Actually, there were 4 different women in different sororities at different universities. And if you look at a descriptive about American, the comments, many of the commenters said they were in sororities and felt the book was very true-to-life. I’m glad your experience was positive, but it sounds like the book captures the true story at business articles, many schools. Ah, sorry. Reading skills. I glossed and a descriptive about American thought the 4 women that helped her were in her own sorority. Makes much more sense the actual way.

I read the book and found it to essays writing Academy, be interesting. It did highlight some key differences between sororities and I found out my school required the writing essay about a person American International School-Salzburg women to live in the sorority house for three years. There was a really large division between the Greeks and how to be a Film Academy the GDIs on about School-Salzburg my campus and I think that really played a big role. Living in a sorority house can be cost prohibitive and I really saw a pretty big difference between the Greeks on my campus and those women I met who went to essays, schools that couldn’t have sorority houses at all or made them voluntary. As a black woman who did not belong to a descriptive American, a sorority (my school did not have them), black sororities and fraternities seem the most idiotic of all. Lack of power, money, influence AND snobbery. Great combination! Um, how on earth would you know? You’ve indicated that you weren’t a member, didn’t have them on essays Fryeburg Academy your campus to make any real determination with regard to writing a person, their money, power, affluence or snobbery?

As a member of one of the large Black sororities, I can assure your there is issues School, plenty of all four of the above! Every organization has it’s positives and it’s negatives, but base your criticism in fact. I get that people are entitled to their own opinions about organizations, but I’d put my chapter Sorors and both their achievements and community service up against writing a descriptive about International any notion of what it means to be in write Catholic a sorority. Writing A Descriptive About American International. 90% of them fall soundly in the definition of be a New York Film, a “Corporette” regardless of their chosen fields of medicine, law, business, education or the arts. And we are in writing a person American International amazing company, – Dr Dorothy Height, Mary McCleod Bethune, Nikki Giovani, Sadie Alexander, Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, etc.. I’ve met some of your less illustrious members. And yes, as you noted, I am entitled to my opinion. I’m posting a comment, not writing an article.

For people just out of college, who did hold leadership positions in the sorority (if all you did was go to parties and wear the t-shirts, no one cares), I think it’s fine. I absolutely do not give those women more consideration or think they are better than other applicants for being the aspects Ashbury College Vice President of Kappa Kappa Gamma or whatever, but it’s totally OK with me that they have it on a descriptive essay about their resume. Essays On Canadian Fryeburg. It is something that they did in college, and with a new grad, I am interested in what they did in college. Do not think for a descriptive essay International one second, however, that lots of extracurriculars or sorority leadership will distract me from be a critical New York Academy a distinctive lack of academic rigor in your courses or poor grade performance, because it won’t. If it’s obvious from your resume and transcripts that you skated through college because you were more interested in partying than learning something, no “leadership positions” you put on your resume – whether it’s for writing a descriptive a sorority or the astronomy club – will matter.

BUT. For anyone more than 5 or so years out of college, including your sorority affiliation on your resume is really, really pathetic. Five years out of college, no one cares. You should not still care. College is over. Write Reviews Catholic High School. I would definitely think less of a non-new-grad candidate who included their sorority “affiliation,” or their sorority “leadership role,” on their resume at that point. For the record: I pledged (Chi Omega), got a bid, turned it down. A Descriptive Essay About International. Best decision I ever made, next to aspects thinking Ashbury College, who I picked to marry. I agree that if you’re 5 of so years out of college and your only American International School-Salzburg involvement with your sorority was in college than including your sorority affiliation on your resume is aspects College, pathetic. But a lot of writing a descriptive about International School-Salzburg, international sororities have strong alumnae members who volunteer their time organizing leadership conferences, fundraising events, and providing mentorship for collegiate members just like members of a Lion’s club or a Rotary club. In those instances I think it’s not at writing for essays of California, Irvine, all pathetic to list your affiliation on your resume under the volunteer section.

I’m an alumnae member of essay about a person International School-Salzburg, Alpha Phi and I thoroughly enjoy volunteering my time both as an advisor to a collegiate chapter and as an executive member of my alum chapter. I don’t have my sorority affiliation listed on how to critical thinker Film Academy my resume because Greek Life is quite under the radar here in Canada and all most people know is negative portrayals from the media. About A Person International. But I do mention it in interviews if it comes up in a valid way and only if I feel the interview is going well. I also proudly wear my pin on aspects Ashbury College International Badge Day and my Red Dress pin every day in Heart Health Month (February), our philanthropy supports Women’s heart health and cardiac care. Not the OP on a descriptive about a person International School-Salzburg this one but sorry, that still all sounds kind of pathetic to me. If you brought up how involved you still are in write my essay School your college sorority and American International your alumni chapter in write my essay reviews Marian Catholic High an interview, I would seriously think you did not have any kind of a real life, or alternatively, that you were choosing not to grow up and move past college.

And I especially don’t get the “I still wear my pin on Badge Day” thing. A Descriptive Essay School-Salzburg. You do understand that like Ann said, no one cares? Right? Assume two candidates with identical academic credentials. One is Treasurer of the Recycling Club (the most boring group I can think of). For Essays University Of California, Irvine (UCI). The other is about American International, Treasurer of Alpha Beta Gamma Delta. I’d be more interested in write my essay Catholic High School interviewing Recycling Club Person. It’s probably not completely fair to post this, but I’ve never forgotten this New York Times “Modern Love” column on a horrific experience a woman had with a sorority. It’s not all unfair stereotypes. Writing A Descriptive About A Person American. Some of it is reality. “My Sorority Pledge?

I Swore Off Sisterhood” That is a horrible story. My little college was non-Greek (one of the things I was looking for in a school and write my essay Marian School very hard to find in writing a descriptive essay American International School-Salzburg the South), but we did have a “women’s service organization” that had a pledge-week, held fundraisers, cost a whole lot of money to get into, and supplied alcohol to underage students on our dry campus. Meanwhile, the rest of us made friends on our own, volunteered on our own, had fun on harvard Cardiff College our own- and all for free! My cousin was involved in her sorority during college, and essay American they all loved her- until they started getting mad at her for missing meetings (scheduled while she was in class) and not pulling her weight in planning things (while she was suffering repeated debilitating days-long migraines). Her “sisters” all knew what she was going through, and aspects of critical Ashbury instead of essay about a person, supporting her in trying to business Millfield School, figure out what was going on with her health and get better, they asked her to leave. In comparison, my roommate broke her leg, and six of writing essay about American, our friends with cars got together with me and we put together a schedule of who was going to drive her to classes, doctor, grocery store, and anywhere else she might have desired to go. My cousin spent three and a half years in harvard Cardiff Sixth Form College that sorority, and she doesn’t talk to any of the women she knew from it. She doesn’t even mention it, which must be horrible- it was a huge part of her life, and it’s like it didn’t even happen.

I guess having leadership experience is a good thing- but just as lawyers (and accountants!) can have bad reps because of writing essay a person, something very few have done, the same can go for Greeks. Yes, lawyers get a bad rep, which sometimes is deserved. But at least lawyers are generally believed to be smart, organized, and competent. Sororities, by contrast, are generally known for being snobbish and articles Millfield excluding and nasty, and a descriptive about International that is not infrequently the reality, as you have pointed out. Gosh, all these nasty little stories about aspects of critical thinking Ashbury College, sororities are coming back to me. A few years ago, I believe a sorority rejected a bunch of women who were deemed insufficiently attractive. (That’s really woman-empowering.) A doctor’s assistant told me about writing essay a person International, her niece who transferred from a Southern school because her sorority sisters had driven her out. Everyone to some extent has to deal with the generalizations made by strangers about their background. For example, if you went to a top Ivy, some people assume you’re a clueless egghead, or a rich legacy, or an on canadian writing Fryeburg Academy, entitled jerk, or a person who thinks s/he’s smarter than s/he really is …. I think there’s value to C in reading how some people might respond to writing a descriptive essay about a person American International, her having been part of a sorority. Business Millfield School. Now that I’ve thought about writing essay International School-Salzburg, it, I’m not sure any law school would care.

Law firms might be different. Time enough to worry about that. I was in a sorority. And I’m really ambivalent about the experience. My school had local (non-Greek) sororities and write Catholic fraternities, so what I experienced was very likely different in many, many, many regards from what Greek sorority members experienced. Without a doubt, belonging to a sorority has had a hugely positive impact on writing a descriptive essay a person American International my life. Write My Essay Marian Catholic. I really met the friends of my life through my sorority; I gained tons of leadership experience; I got to work with charities throughout undergrad; I met and developed relationships with professional women well before I embarked on my job search; I continue to network with this small group of alumnae.

I wholeheartedly agree with others here who say that being in a sorority was empowering and benefited their overall professional development. That was certainly my *individual* experience. But, I also think the *system* of sororities/fraternities has a lot of issues. While I found my sisters to be almost uniformly impressive — and mostly feminist — young women, I found the traditions of our sororities and fraternities often rooted in sexism, misogyny and super weird about special rights and privileges. For instance, many of my sorority’s (which was originally founded as a literary club) traditional secret songs involved lines about involvement with guys in the fraternities. Yeah, it was silly fun, but it’s also just plain weird for a descriptive essay a person International a bunch of writing conclusions for essays University of California, Irvine, awesome women to be memorizing songs detailing men’s attributes based upon their fraternity affiliations. I know men had similar (and frankly debasing) songs about sororities. Add to this the traditions of stags with fraternities only writing a descriptive about International (though we did have a stag with one other sorority once), private parties where only aspects of critical thinking Ashbury College members are invited (only contributing to divisions among classmates — I had many friends outside of my sorority and always felt weird that I couldn’t integrate them into essay about a person, this part of my essay reviews Catholic High School, my life), and some other very strange pledging traditions (we did not haze, though I know other organizations at my school did): and overall I have to conclude that as a whole, this system of exclusive organizations — as presently constructed — are not good for undergraduate culture as a whole. Despite my mostly wonderful individual experience. In sum, just because I gained privilege from the system doesn’t make the system right. or just.

FWIW, I put my leadership experience in my sorority on my resume right out of writing essay about International School-Salzburg, undergrad, but I put it under other activities, next to my academic honor society memberships — as opposed to being the editor-in-chief of the college paper, which I placed under job experience. I’m five years out of school now, and essays on canadian Fryeburg Academy don’t list the sorority at all. i’d leave it off a resume (if you have other things to put on there), but if you have connections from your affiliation, work em. A Descriptive Essay About A Person International. this chain just shows there’s a lot of negative associations with the greek system, so why hurt yourself before you get in the door. Remember this is my essay reviews Catholic School, just grad school the OP is applying to. It’s not a job where she should have more serious achievements on a descriptive essay about a person International her resume. Many grad schools both want and expect to see clubs, school involvement and school-life balance. How To Be A. I’ve served on admissions committees (admittedly not at essay about American International, the Ivy League) and an applicant without clubs (or a story) reads like that really unfortunate kid with no social skills who you don’t want claiming your school as her alma mater.

By the business same token, law schools typically are interested in your intellectual and academic ability, and to some extent, your maturity. Writing American International School-Salzburg. Now of reviews Catholic School, course, an applicant with a great LSAT score and GPA from a good school is writing essay a person American, going to essays on canadian Academy, do fine, even when disclosing fraternity or sorority membership. It’s the borderline case in which this might matter. For very good reason, fraternities and sororities are not associated in the popular mind with the writing essay American International brightest, most diligent and meritocratic of students, the kinds of students that law schools supposedly like. How many movies have I seen in which the fraternity bros get together to cheat on an exam after finishing a three-day bender? How many real accounts have I read about women being attacked or sexually used by articles fraternity guys, or about about International School-Salzburg, sorority women exhibiting vicious “mean girl” snobbery? It was a frat at Yale, DKE, that marched its pledges past the Cardiff Sixth Form College women’s center at night, screaming “No means Yes. Writing Essay About A Person School-Salzburg. Yes means anal.” Yup, if you act like an animal, chances are people are going to think you’re not too bright.

Columbia had some kind of scandal involving a fraternity in how to thinker New York Film Academy the last couple of years. Those are just the ones I’ve heard of. I’m confused. A Descriptive Essay A Person American School-Salzburg. Since when do law schools require resumes? Not to defend the how to be a New York Film Academy fraternities, but to clarify the situation… only 10% of students at Columbia are in writing about American School-Salzburg fraternities. And the scandal was over drug-dealing. Thanks for the info. I didn’t suggest that most students at Columbia were in revista harvard Cardiff Sixth Form fraternities. I’m sure very few Yalies are in frats as well.

A scandal is writing a descriptive essay American International School-Salzburg, a scandal. I think drug dealing serious. These student-run housing situations are far more often the for essays University of California, seat of problems than the regular student residences. I don’t understand why, according to many opinions stated on thread, all sorority members are guilty by association simply because other members of Greek houses, at other schools and in other parts of the country, have committed criminal behavior or displayed extremely poor judgment. I was a division 1 athlete. There have been many scandals in which division 1 athletes have raped women and engaged in other criminal behavior.

One or two of these scandals even took place at my own school. Does that mean I’m a rapist and a criminal? Replace “division 1 athlete” with “Greek house member” and there you go. It makes no sense and writing about American International reflects poorly on the commenters, not the sorority members. I don’t think you can really compare Division 1 Athlete to revista harvard Cardiff Sixth, Greek House member. Division 1 Athletes qualify for that status based on merit and ability.

Greek house members become members based on more superficial qualities like appearance and similar background. I think you completely missed the point of a descriptive essay a person International School-Salzburg, her comment. The point was that prejudice and business articles stereotyping is unacceptable. My personal experience with putting my Greek affiliation on my resume has always been very positive. I was the president of my sorority at essay a person School-Salzburg, Harvard, which might help balance out the “ditz” impression that seems to be a common fear. In any event, I’ve discussed the harvard Cardiff Form College experience (which was extremely valuable and writing a person American International formative for me) in almost all of my interviews, including the interviews for the law firm at which I’m now an associate. When I was interviewing for clerkships, I discussed the experience with a 9th Circuit judge who had held a similar leadership position during her experience in a sorority.

She was enthusiastic about discussing the Greek system and its positive effects on her own life. Now that I am in write my essay Catholic the position of interviewing candidates at writing a descriptive essay American, my firm, I enjoy talking about the aspects of critical thinking Greek system as a point of writing a descriptive, commonality with candidates who list their own affiliation. I wouldn’t necessarily just list membership in a Greek organization on your resume, but I think that the leadership experience is valuable and how to be a thinker the affiliation generally can at times be a good talking point. Just my own two cents. I was in writing a descriptive essay a person American a sorority (er, “women’s fraternity”) in revista harvard College undergrad (small southern school, 75%+ Greek). The time commitment is pretty large, even for regular members. Triple the amount of meetings for women in American International the top leadership positions. I would never, ever have thought to Cardiff Sixth Form College, put involvement in a Greek organization on my resume.

That being said, all of these comments have convinced me that it can be useful in certain cases. It certainly demonstrates reliability and leadership skills – especially if she make a good case for how those skills will serve her in a descriptive essay a person International School-Salzburg the workplace. I was a pretty terrible sorority member – I was just too busy with school work to harvard Cardiff Sixth College, take any leadership positions. Mostly I learned to try to stay engaged in seemingly interminable meetings, while unsuccessfully keeping my mind off of the writing American School-Salzburg 1 million other things that I had to of critical thinking College, get done. Hey, great practice for the working world!

That being said, I probably would drop it off the resume by a descriptive essay a person American 10+ years after graduation. By then, you have relevant professional experience. I do have my affiliation listed on LinkedIn for thinking Ashbury College networking purposes, but I do not have it on my resume. Didn’t OP say she was applying to law SCHOOL? Not a job. I remember putting like every significant extracurricular etc. down in my law school applications. I don’t think admissions people at law school are going to hold any particular affiliation against anyone, even if it’s not one they would choose themselves. When it comes to a resume for a job, I just don’t think it’s that big a deal. Sure some people hate sororities. Writing A Descriptive A Person American. I’m one.

My college didn’t have them and in my snotty youth days, I turned up my nose at people I knew at schools that had them. (I’m not from the south.) Has nothing to do with whether they are a “women’s organization,” I thought they were about conformity and pleasing men. But good grief, I would never be so small minded as to reject a job applicant out of hand because I saw a sorority mentioned in context of leadership skills on her resume. Everyone is issues articles Millfield School, a complete package, and writing a descriptive about School-Salzburg no job applicant is exactly like me in all respects. Don’t put it on. Essays Writing. Yes, I can see why such interests are problematic. Certainly no one would ever join a community of like-minded women to discuss these things. @@ I’m also amazed how provincial some northeasterners are. Thinking that sororities are only ditzy MRS seekers reflects poorly on you and a descriptive a person American says that you have very little awareness, knowledge or openness to anything outside NYC. Writing Fryeburg Academy. It’s not flattering. You’re not doing yourself any favors with this post either, sweetie. :)

There’s more to the Northeast than NYC. Yes, I’m aware. I’m originally from the Northeast myself. Essay A Person International. But, I guess some people think Legally Blonde and Animal House were documentaries instead of comedies. I went to critical thinker New York Academy, school in writing essay about American the Midwest, my cousin went in the Southeast and be a critical Film Academy both of us found sororities at our schools that had those traits. There were only one or two sororities that really seemed to attract the more intellectual women at my school, and that was well known. My mom was in a sorority and writing a descriptive essay about a person American she still is delighted when she meets other ladies from the same group. It’s like a much smaller version of an alumni connection — if I interviewed two people and one went to my alma mater, I might be more likely to connect with that person. Doesn’t mean I’d automatically choose or disqualify on that though. About Us – The American International School – Salzburg

an essay on man pope Pope wrote his Essay on a descriptive essay American School-Salzburg, Man in rhyming verse. Certainly today, we think anybody that writes poetry is revista Sixth one who is a bit odd, to say the least. Back in the eighteenth century, it was not so strange. Pope stated that he had two reasons for writing his essay in a person American, such a manner. First, he thought that principles, maxims, or precepts so written, both strike the reader more strongly at first, and are more easily retained by him afterwards. The second reason that Pope gave is that he thought that he could express himself more shortly this way than in essays on canadian Fryeburg Academy, prose itself. I here make comments about the expressions and thoughts of a descriptive a person American International, Pope in his essay.

I have quoted at length from his essay. Certainly there is much I have left out, because, likely, certain verses referred to events, persons and things of the early eighteenth century which, quite frankly, I am unfamiliar with. Spattered throughout Pope's work are references to essays on canadian writing, God and His great domain. Such references in the writings out of the eighteenth century are not strange. The livelihood of writers, by and large -- as was with the case of all artists back then -- depended almost entirely on the generosity of essay about International, church and my essay reviews Catholic High School state, so it was necessary in a descriptive essay International, those days that writers give due regard to religious authority. Believing that if Pope were looking over my shoulder he would have no objection, I have left out be a thinker New York Film religious epaulets. Within the first few lines, we see Pope wondering about the fruitlessness of life.

We have no choice: we come to a descriptive about a person International School-Salzburg, it, look out and then die. Aspects Of Critical Ashbury College? What we see as we look out on the scene of man is a mighty maze! But Pope does not think this complex of existence is without a plan. Man might sort through the maze because he has a marvelous mental faculty, that of reason; man can determine the nature of the world in which he lives; he can see that all things have bearings, ties and strong connections and nice dependencies. He, who thro' vast immensity can pierce, See worlds on worlds compose one universe, Observe how system into system runs, What other planets circle other suns, Look'd thro'? or can a part contain the writing a descriptive American International School-Salzburg whole? Is the great chain that draws all to agree, - And, drawn, supports - upheld by God or thee?

In his next stanza, Pope makes reference to presumptuous man! Why should one be disturbed because he cannot immediately figure out all of the mysteries with which he is presented? It cannot be expected that one part of existence (man) should understand all the other parts, he then continues: As of thy mother Earth, why oaks are made. Writing Conclusions For Essays University? Taller or stronger than the weeds they shade. Writing Essay A Person International? And all that rises, rise in due degree; Then, in the sale of reas'ning life, 'tis plain. There must be, somewhere, such a rank as Man. When the dull ox, why now he breaks the clod, Is now a victim, and now Egypt's god, - Then say not Man's imperfect, Heav'n in how to thinker New York Film Academy, fault, - Say rather Man's as perfect as he ought: His knowledge measur'd to his state and writing a descriptive essay American place, His time a moment, and be a critical New York a point his space.

Pope continues with this theme into writing essay about International his third stanza, in saying Heav'n from all creatures hides the book of fate, and continues: The lamb thy riot dooms to bleed to-day, Had he thy reason, would he skip and play? Pleas'd to the last he crops the flow'ry food, And licks the hand just rais'd to shed his blood. Who sees with equal eye, as God of all, A hero perish, or a sparrow fall, Atoms or systems into ruin hurl'd, And now a bubble burst, and now a world. Then giving way to essays on canadian Academy, his religious bent, makes reference to the great teacher Death and continues with his most famous lines: Hope springs eternal in the human breast; Man never is, but always to writing a descriptive a person American International School-Salzburg, be blest: The soul uneasy and confin'd from home, Rest and expatiates in a life to come. Next, Pope deals with native people of the uncivilized territories of the reviews High world, and how they do not get hung up on such large questions as are expressed in Pope's essay: Lo, the poor Indian! whose untutor'd mind. Sees God in writing, clouds, or hears him in business issues, the wind; His soul proud Science never taught to stray. Far as the writing a descriptive essay about a person American International School-Salzburg solar walk or milky way; Yet simple Nature to his hope has giv'n, Behind the cloud-topp'd hill, a humbler heav'n; Some safer world in revista harvard Form College, depth of woods embrac'd,

Some happier island in the wat'ry waste, Where slaves once more their native land behold, No fiends torment, no Christians thirst for gold! To be, contents his natural desire; He asks no angel's wing, no seraph's fire: But things, admitted to that equal sky, His faithful dog shall bear him company. Next, we see Pope start to develop the theme that runs throughout his essay; man is part of writing about American, a larger setting, a part of essays on canadian Fryeburg, nature. Man depends on nature for his very substance, and yet, treats her roughly. Destroy all creatures for thy sport or gust, Yet cry, if Man's unhappy, God's unjust; Ask for what end the writing a descriptive essay International heav'nly bodies shine, Earth for whose use, Pride answers, 'Tis for mine! For me kind Nature wakes her genial pow'r, Suckles each herb and spreads out ev'ry flow'r; Pope asserts that man is ruled from within, by writing for essays University of California, (UCI) his reason and by his passion. Better for us, perhaps, it might appear, Were there are harmony, all virtue here; That never air or ocean felt the wind; That never passion discompos'd the mind. American International? But all subsists by elemental strife; And passions are the elements of life.

The gen'ral Order since the whole began. Be A Critical Thinker New York Academy? Is kept in writing a descriptive about International, Nature, and is kept in essays Fryeburg Academy, Man. Writing A Descriptive Essay About A Person American International? Passion may be equated to essays on canadian Fryeburg, instinct; and instinct is the sole guide of animals. Instinct is all that animals need as evolution has fitted each animal to writing a descriptive International, his home environment, unlike man who is in want of the how to critical New York Academy strength of writing essay a person International School-Salzburg, bulls, the of critical thinking Ashbury fur of writing a descriptive about School-Salzburg, bears. Here with degrees of swiftness, there of force: All in exact proportion to the state; Nothing to add, and nothing to revista Form College, abate. Each beast, each insect, happy in a descriptive about International School-Salzburg, its own: Is Heav'n unkind to Man, and Man alone? Shall he alone, whom rational we call, Be pleas'd with nothing, if not bless'd with all? Again, Pope emphasizes how nature all good and wise. and what it gives, and what denies has perfected itself and many of its creations: The spider's tough how exquisitely fine!

Feels at write my essay reviews Marian, each thread, and lives along the line: In the essay about a person International School-Salzburg nice bee, what sense so subtly true. From pois'nous herbs extracts the healing dew? In nature, we find life in a complete variety, - vast chain of being everything beast, bird, fish, insect. Or in the full creation leave a void, Where, one step broken, the great scale's destroy'd: From Nature's chain whatever link you strike, Tenth or ten thousandth, breaks the chain alike. The point, I think, is that there is write Marian Catholic High School a fearful balance of nature in all its variety, and we dare not destroy one aspect of writing essay about a person American, nature for fear of destroying the whole. All this dread order break - for whom? for thee? Vile worm! - oh madness! pride! impiety! In the last line of Pope's first epistle, he bangs home the importance of the ruling mind of nature, that while some parts might seem to us to be absurd, it is part of the general frame that all of nature, including ourselves, are but parts of one stupendous whole. This whole body of University of California, Irvine, nature is through all life and extends throughout all of the universe and operates unspent. Pope concludes his first epistle: Safe in the hand of writing essay American, one disposing Pow'r, Or in how to, the natal, or the mortal hour.

All Nature is but Art, unknown to writing School-Salzburg, thee; All chance, direction, which thou canst not see. All discord, harmony not understood, All partial evil, universal good: And, spite of writing, pride, in erring reason's spite, One truth is clear, whatever is, is right. Pope opens his second Epistle much the same as he opened his first. What is the function of man, positioned as he is somewhere between a god and a beast. About A Person American School-Salzburg? Man, during that brief interlude between birth and my essay Marian Catholic School death, experiences a chaos of thought and passion, all confus'd. About A Person American International? He finds on earth the Great lord of all things, yet a prey to business issues, all. Man's function, Pope concludes, is to make a proper study of mankind ; man is to know himself.

What man will come to know is that he is ruled by passion; passion is the ruler and reason it's counsellor. Alas what wonder! Man's superior part. Uncheck'd may rise and climb from art to art; But when his own great work is but begun, What Reason weaves, by writing essay American International Passion is of critical thinking undone. It is in the nature of a descriptive essay about American International School-Salzburg, man to first serve himself; but, on account of reason, to do so with the long range in view. Two Principles in human nature reign; Self-love, to urge, and Reason, to restrain; Self-love still stronger, as its objects nigh; Reason's at distance, and in prospect lie: A person is driven by passion, driven by his desire for pleasure; temptation is strong and passion is of critical thinking Ashbury thicker than arguments. However, a person soon learns through bitter experience that one cannot let his or her passions run wild. Attention, habit and essay a person American International School-Salzburg experience gains; Each strengthens Reason, and Self-love restrains. Self-love and Reason to one end aspire, Pain their aversion, Pleasure their desire, Pleasure, or wrong or rightly understood, Our greatest evil, or our greatest good.

Passions, tho' selfish, if their means be fair, List under reason, and deserve her care. On life's vast ocean diversely we sail, Reason the card, but passion is the revista Sixth Form College gale;2. Love, Hope, and Joy, fair Pleasure's smiling train, Hate, Fear, and Grief, the writing a descriptive essay American family of Pain, These mix'd with art, and to on canadian writing Fryeburg Academy, due bounds confin'd, Make and maintain the balance of the mind: Pope's theme is again repeated: the two driving forces of man are his reason and his passion. However, passion is the king and writing a descriptive essay a person American International School-Salzburg reason but a weak queen. What can she more than tell us we are fools? Teach us to write Marian Catholic School, mourn our nature, not to mend. A sharp accuser but a helpless friend!

Reason (th' Eternal Art, educing good from ill) is not a guide but a guard. Passion is the writing essay International School-Salzburg mightier pow'r. Envy, Pope points out essays on canadian Fryeburg as an writing essay a person School-Salzburg, aside, is how to thinker New York Film Academy something that can be possessed only by those who are learn'd or brave. Ambition: can destroy or save, and makes a patriot as it makes a knave. With Pope's thoughts, it soon becomes clear one should not necessarily consider that envy and ambition are in writing a descriptive about a person, themselves wrong. They are moving forces in a person and if properly guided, can serve a person well. Essays On Canadian Writing Academy? As, in some well-wrought picture, light and shade. Writing A Descriptive Essay A Person American School-Salzburg? And oft so mix, the diff'rence is too nice, Where ends the virtue, or begins the vice. And virtuous and vicious ev'ry man must be, Few in the extreme, but all in the degree; Each person is driven by self-love, but on the same occasion each on the other to depend, a master, or a servant, or a friend, bids each on essays on canadian Fryeburg, other for assistance call. A Descriptive Essay A Person American? Each person seeks his own happiness, seeks his own contentment; each is proud in articles Millfield, what he or she has achieved, no matter what another person might think of those achievements.

Whate'er the passions, knowledge, fame, or pelf, Not one will change is neighbour with himself. The learn'd is happy nature to explore, The fool is happy that he knows no more; The rich is happy in the plenty given, The poor contents him with the care of Heaven, See the blind beggar dance, the cripple sing. The sot a hero, lunatic a king; The starving chemist in his golden views. A Descriptive Essay About A Person American International? Supremely bless'd, the conclusions for essays of California, poet in his Muse. None of us should be critical of another person's choice in life, who is to know it is right. Behold the child, by nature's kindly law, Pleased with a rattle, tickled with a straw: Some livelier plaything give his youth delight, A little louder, but as empty quite: Scarfs, garters, gold, amuse his riper stage, And beads and a descriptive about a person American International School-Salzburg prayer-books are the toys of revista harvard Form, age: Pleased with this bauble still, as that before, Till tired he sleeps, and writing essay School-Salzburg life's poor play is writing conclusions University Irvine (UCI) o'er. Pope returns, in essay International School-Salzburg, his third Epistle, to his ever present theme, all is natural in nature and aspects of critical Ashbury man is a part of nature. A Descriptive Essay About American International School-Salzburg? He first observes how plastic nature is, how everything is Millfield dependant on one and the other, is attracted to one and writing essay a person School-Salzburg the other, down even to single atoms. Everything it's neighbour to embrace. (While Pope did not do so, he might just as easily have observed that things in nature repel one another, equally so.

All things, in the final analysis, are held in essays on canadian Fryeburg Academy, the balance, suspended, so it seems, between the two great forces of attraction and repulsion.) All forms that perish other forms supply, (By turns we catch the vital breath, and die) Like bubbles on writing essay about International, the sea a matter borne, They rise, they break, and to that sea return. Nothing is foreign; parts relate to whole: Then, Pope picks up once again his theme of the ruling principles, reason and passion. Here in his third Epistle, he refers to instinct as the unerring guide that reason often fails us, though sometimes serves when press'd. But honest instinct comes a volunteer, Sure never to o'ershoot, but just to hit, While still to aspects of critical thinking College, wide or short is human wit; Sure by a descriptive essay about a person American International quick nature happiness to gain, Which heavier reason labour at conclusions for essays of California, Irvine (UCI), in vain. Instinct can be seen at work throughout nature, for example, Who make the spider parallels design . Writing Essay? without rule or line? Not just the of California, Irvine (UCI) spider does things by instinct, man does. The obvious example is his artistic work, but our instincts serve us on a much broader range. Think! And you will wonder about many of the daily things that are done, automatically it seems. What, exactly, is it that prompts us to do things. Who calls the council, states the certain day, Who forms the phalanx, and about a person American International who points the way?

Pope then comes to a rather critical passage in his essay, when he deals with family units in the animal kingdom versus human beings. The fact of the matter is, family units do not count for be a thinker New York Film much in writing essay about American, the animal kingdom, at any rate, not for issues articles School long. However, family connections for human beings extend over a long period, indeed, over a lifetime. I would observe that it is an writing essay about School-Salzburg, evolutionary development, needed because of the long time required before a child passes into adulthood. Aspects Thinking Ashbury? These family feelings are important for the development and cohesion of the writing a descriptive essay a person family, but not necessarily good when extended to the larger group, society as a whole (this is a theme that I have developed elsewhere (EconEcon.doc) and which someday I hope to put up on the 'net.). Thus beast and write Marian Catholic School bird their common charge attend, The mothers nurse it, and essay about American the sires defend: The young dismiss'd to wander earth or air, There stops the instinct, and there ends the care; The link dissolves, each seeks a fresh embrace, Another love succeeds, another race. A longer care man's helpless kind demands; That longer care contracts more lasting bands: Reflection, reason, still the ties improve, At one extend the how to be a Film Academy interest, and the love; With choice we fix, with sympathy we burn; Each virtue in each passion takes its turn; And still new needs, new helps, new habits rise.

That graft benevolence on charities. Still as one brood, and as another rose, These natural love maintain'd, habitual those: The last, scarce ripen'd into perfect man, Saw helpless from a descriptive essay American International School-Salzburg, him whom their life began: Memory and forecast just returns engage; That pointed back to writing conclusions University Irvine, youth, this on to age; While pleasure, gratitude, and hope, combined, Still spread the interest, and preserved the kind. Pope then, continuing with his third Epistle, returns to his principle and the power of nature. Nature is a driving gale, a fact which can be observed in the voice of nature and which we can learn from the writing essay a person School-Salzburg birds and the beasts. It was the power of nature that built the ant's republic and the realm of bees. Pope observes anarchy without confusion. Their separate cells and properties maintain. Mark what unvaried laws preserve each state;- Laws wise as nature, and aspects as fix'd as fate. In vain thy reason finer webs shall draw; Entangle justice in her net of law; And right, too rigid, harden into wrong, Still for writing a descriptive American International the strong too weak, the weak too strong. Yet go! and thus o'er all the writing University of California, (UCI) creatures sway; Thus let the wiser make the rest obey; And for a descriptive School-Salzburg those arts mere instinct could afford, Be crown'd as monarchs, or as gods adored.

It is the same voice of nature by which men evolved and cities were built, societies were made. That while men in the gradual and slow build-up ravished one another with war, it was commerce that brought about civilization. Men came to new countries with war-like intentions, but soon became friends when they realized there was much more profit in trade. When love was liberty, and nature law: Thus states were form'd; the name of king unknown, Till common interest placed the sway in on canadian Academy, one. 'Twas Virtue only, or in arts or arms, So, it was trade that built civilizations, and Pope observes, that it was tradition that preserves them. Convey'd unbroken faith from sire to son; The worker from the work distinct was known, Then, continuing in this historical vein, Pope deals with the development of government and of laws. So drives self-love, through just and through unjust. To one man's power, ambition, lucre, lust: The same self-love, in all, becomes the cause.

Of what restrains him, government and laws: For, what one likes if others like as well, What serves one will, when many wills rebel? How shall we keep, what, sleeping or awake, A weaker may surprise, a stronger take? His safety must his liberty restrain: All join to guard what each desires to gain. Forced into virtue thus by writing a descriptive essay about International self-defence, Ev'n kings learn'd justice and benevolence: Self-love forsook the path it first pursued, And found the private in the public good. Aspects Of Critical College? 'Twas then, the writing essay about a person International School-Salzburg studious head or generous mind, Follower of critical thinker New York Academy, God or friend of human-kind, Poet or patriot, rose but to restore. The faith and moral Nature gave before; Relumed her ancient light, not kindled new; If not God's image, yet his shadow drew; Taught power's due use to people and to writing a descriptive about School-Salzburg, kings; Taught not to slack nor strain its tender strings; The less or greater set so justly true, That touching one must strike the aspects of critical thinking College other too; Till jarring int'rests of themselves create. Th' according music of a descriptive essay about a person School-Salzburg, a well-mix'd state. Conclusions For Essays Of California, (UCI)? Such is the world's great harmony, that springs. Writing About American? From order, union, full consent of things: Where small and great, where weak and mighty made. To serve, not suffer, strengthen, not invade; More pow'rful each as needful to how to critical thinker New York Academy, the rest, And in writing a descriptive about a person American School-Salzburg, proportion as it blesses, blest; Draw to one point, and to one centre bring. Fryeburg? Beast, man, or angel, servant, lord, or king.

Pope makes a side observation that while government is a descriptive International necessary, its form is of less importance, what is important, is a good administration: For forms of government let fools contest; Whate'er is best administer'd is how to critical New York Film Academy best: Pope then concludes in his third Epistle, emphasizing that regard for oneself and his family has to be different than regard for the whole of society, that nature link'd the gen'ral frame and bade self-love and social be the same. In his last Epistle on the Essay of Man, Pope deals with the subject of happiness. It may be any one of a number of things, it depends on the person: good, pleasure, ease, content! whatever thy name. That happiness as a plant of celestial seed will grow, and about American International if it doesn't, one should not blame the soil, but rather the way one tends the for essays University of California, Irvine (UCI) soil. Though man may well seek happiness in many quarters, it will only be found in nature. Man should avoid extremes. He should not go about in life trusting everything, but on essay about International School-Salzburg, the same occasion neither should he be a total skeptic.

Take Nature's path, and made Opinion's leave; All states can reach it and all heads conceive; Obvious her goods, in no extreme they dwell; There needs but thinking right, and meaning well; And mourn our various portions as we please, Equal is of critical Ashbury College common sense, and common ease. A Descriptive A Person American? To Pope, pleasure does not last, it sicken, and all glories sink. To each person comes his or her share and who would more obtain, Shall find the writing for essays of California, Irvine pleasure pays not half the pain. To be rich, to be wise: these are both laudable goals and a person looking about will always be able to find others who have riches and wisdom in varying degrees, but it cannot be concluded to writing a descriptive about a person American International School-Salzburg, any degree that they are happy. Happiness comes when one has health, peace, and competence. It is not clear to me from Pope's lines how one might secure peace and competence; health, he says, consists with temperance alone.

It is in the nature of harvard Sixth College, man to a descriptive essay American School-Salzburg, attempt to change things; he is essays Fryeburg never happy with things as he finds them; never happy with his fellow man; never happy with the world about writing essay School-Salzburg him. We forever strive to make things perfect, a state that can hardly be define in write my essay reviews Marian School, human terms. Essay International? Those that reflect on man's condition will soon have Utopian dreams. But still this world, so fitted for how to be a New York Film the knave, Contents us not. A better shall we have? A kingdom of the essay about a person American International School-Salzburg just then let it be: But first consider how those just agree. The good must merit God's peculiar care; But who but God can tell us who they are? It all too often appears to us that virtue starves, while vice is fed. Be A Thinker Film? One might wish for man to be a God and for about American International earth to be a heaven, both God and heaven coming from the imaginations of man.

But, Pope concludes: 'Whatever is, is right.' -- This world, 'tis true. Of fame, Pope says, it is writing conclusions Irvine but a fancied life in others' breath . All that we feel of it begins and ends in the small circle of writing a descriptive about, our foes and friends . It will get you nothing but a crowd of stupid starers and of loud huzzas. Critical New York Film? Of wisdom, Pope attempts a definition and points out how often the essay about a person American wise are bound to thinking, trudge alone with neither help nor understanding from his fellow man. In parts superior what advantage lies! Tell, for you can, what is it to be wise? 'Tis but to know how little can be known ; To see all others' faults, and feel our own: Condem'd in business or in arts to drudge, Without a second, or without a judge: Truths would you teach, or save a sinking land?

All fear, none aid you, and writing a descriptive School-Salzburg few understand. Be A Critical Film Academy? And so we arrive at the last of Pope's lines. Show'd erring Pride, WHATEVER IS, IS RIGHT; That Reason, Passion, answer one great aim; That true Self-love and Social are the writing a descriptive a person International same . English 245: Film Form and Culture. Sound in the Opening Montage. “This is the end…” Actually, just the writing about a person School-Salzburg, beginning, of Apocalypse Now . In class, I showed the opening scene of the film but didn’t say much about it. That’s because it’s a very well-known – and brilliant – use of sound in the film. It functions as an thinking College, unconventional overture, as it introduces not only Captain Willard, the main character, but also some of the major themes in the film. Let me focus on the song for a moment. Writing A Descriptive Essay About American International School-Salzburg! The song you hear on the soundtrack during the opening montage is “The End” by The Doors. Why a song about the end at write Marian School the beginning of the writing essay about International, film? Because it indicates the end of Captain Willard’s illusions about the war, and the end of America’s illusions as well.

The film was made in 1979, four years after the Vietnam War ended, and it was a bitter, soul-searching time – what President Jimmy Carter infamously called a time of “malaise” in the country. The United States had lost a war for the first time in its history; it’s technological prowess and superiority had been bested by a rag-tag communist liberation army. This opening scene is thinking much more about a descriptive about a person International, 1979 than 1969 (around the time the film is set). If the director Francis Ford Coppola had chosen a different song, even a different song by be a thinker Academy, The Doors, the effect and the message would have been quite different. Writing Essay A Person! I should note that the how to critical Film Academy, film came out before popular music (rather than a composed score) became the norm for movie soundtracks. This innovation in Apocalypse Now suggests that Coppola chose the essay about a person International, song for the way it helped communicate the deeper meaning of his film. In your textbook, the authors write about the “use of sound to indicate character subjectivity” (236). They also mention that “often diegetic music reveals character traits” (237). All this is true of the of California, Irvine, use of the song at the beginning of Apocalypse Now . It takes us inside the boozy head of Willard in the hotel room. It reveals to us what Willard is thinking, in all it surreal contours.

We hear other sounds mediated through Willard’s subjectivity in this scene, such as the distorted sound of a ceiling fan, which turns into the distorted sound of a descriptive American International helicopter blades – the ubiquitous sound we hear throughout the film, and throughout most Vietnam War films (Korean War films too, such as Robert Altman’s M.A.S.H. ). These are sounds that Willard is hearing. The fact that the sound is distorted tells us it’s coming from my essay reviews High, Willard’s subjective viewpoint. So, just as camera shots can be subjective (such as the shot of the reflection of the snow-globe at writing a descriptive essay International School-Salzburg the beginning of Citizen Kane ), so too can sounds. One of the best ways to Irvine (UCI), use sound to get into a descriptive essay about a person American International the head of characters is the voice-over. As you know, there is plenty of that in Apocalypse Now . The very first line that Willard utters in voice-over signals the essays on canadian Fryeburg, unconventional use of this device in the film: “Saigon. Shit. . . . Still in Saigon.” In this one line, heard alongside the writing a descriptive essay about American School-Salzburg, music of be a critical thinker Film a marching band outside the a person International, window, Willard not only swears, but shows his utter revulsion in regards to the war, while at Sixth Form the same time showing that he can’t wait to get back to the jungle. Like a lot of soldiers in Vietnam, and elsewhere in other wars, Willard hates the war but is lost and a descriptive essay School-Salzburg, unmotivated without it.

It gives his life meaning. I think you would agree with me (and disagree with the script-writing guru Robert McKee [of Adaptation ]) that, in Apocalypse Now , the voice-over is vital, not only for presenting vital information about character and University of California,, plot, but for taking us inside the head of the lead character, revealing to us his subjective take on writing a descriptive essay American the insanity of war. This is the aspects thinking, famous scene where the cowboy-surfer Colonel Kilgore bombs a Vietnamese village “back to the Stone Age,” destroying a village in order to save it. He provides a soundtrack for a descriptive American School-Salzburg, his bombing raid: “The Ride of the harvard Form, Valkyries,” from a Richard Wagner opera. Your textbook authors explain: The choice of music is an intertextual reference to [D. W. Griffiths’s film] The Birth of a Nation , whose original score featured Wagner’s music accompanying the writing essay International, Ku Klux Klan’s triumphant charge. Moreover, the choice of Wagner here is a historical reference to German fascism, as Adolf Hitler admired Wagner’s music and the composer’s anti-Semitic writing. (260). As the textbook authors note, there is parallel sound editing in this scene, as the choppers blaring Wagner alternate with shots of a quiet village, where only the sound of children can be heard, and my essay reviews Catholic, then a relatively soft alarm bell. The sound of the loud choppers and music slowly builds in a descriptive a person the shots of the quiet village, creating a sense of dread.

The textbook authors explain that. The abrupt movement from loud to soft shifts the audience’s identification, so that the my essay Marian Catholic School, excitement audiences might otherwise share with the soldiers onscreen gives way to empathy for the villagers. Writing A Descriptive About A Person! Sound editor Walter Murch’s manipulation of volume in this scene puts audiences in the position of the attacked, as well as the attacker. (260). This split identification not only defines the audience’s experience, but also the writing Academy, experience of the war on the “home-front,” with the American populace nearly split on the justness of the writing essay a person International School-Salzburg, Vietnam War. The use of sound in this part of the film is also part of a larger sound design in the film, in writing conclusions for essays University (UCI) which periods of quiet alternate with bombastic noise. Characters having to yell over the sound of shooting, bombing, and the cries of the wounded (and the sound of a priest saying mass during the raid, and the sound of writing a descriptive essay International a cow being lifted by a helicopter, etc.) – or use radio or megaphones – is not bad sound design. The noise is an inescapable part of modern, mechanized war.

In the first half of the write reviews School, film, the audience is encouraged to identify the noise with modern American society, and the quiet with rural Vietnam. It illustrates this statement by your textbook authors: “Because dialogue tends to overwhelm sound effects, those rare moments when sound effects do compete with dialogue are particularly important” (251). In regards to sound in films, if it’s soft and hard to hear, it’s important. The quieter it is on the soundtrack, the harder you should listen. Let me illustrate the sound vs. silence rhythm in Apocalypse Now by focusing on a quiet scene that comes between the loud and disturbing opening montage, and the much louder Air Cavalry scene. This is a descriptive about a person International School-Salzburg a scene that I discussed in be a critical thinker Academy class, where Willard meets with three men in the private quarters of a general, and is given his mission to writing American International, kill Colonel Kurtz. First, there’s the revista Cardiff Form College, background music in the scene (which you really have to listen for). It’s what we would call “muzak,” or “easy-listening” music. It defines the general and the scene, in contradistinction to the way noise defines Kilgore and his Air Cavalry. It indicates that the general is genteel, and a little prissy – or, at the very least, old (at a time when hippies and activists in the counterculture were urging young people “not to trust anyone over writing a descriptive essay, 30”). To emphasize this, we see a number of close-ups of the essays writing Fryeburg Academy, general’s soft hands and writing a descriptive essay about a person International, fancy eating utensils, not to mention the delicacies they are eating during the scene.

In this scene, we also hear Col. Kurtz for the first time, on audio-tape. It’s significant that Kurtz is introduced in revista harvard Cardiff Sixth Form the film via sound. It’s even more significant that what we hear are the ramblings of a madman. The tape really represents what the writing a descriptive about International, general and his adjutants want to hear. We hear a very different Kurtz later, when he reads from Time Magazine to impress upon the captured Willard that the military establishment is lying to the American people (and suggesting that mainstream publications like Time Magazine have become vehicles of war propaganda). It was the “silent partner” that I concentrated on when we discussed this scene in class. The “silent partner,” unlike the other two men, is wearing civilian clothes. He is most likely CIA. He does have one line, and it’s an writing conclusions for essays University (UCI), important one: he says, “terminate with extreme prejudice.” What this basically means is: “do whatever you need to a descriptive essay International School-Salzburg, do to kill Kurtz.” With this one line, the CIA officer basically issues the University Irvine (UCI), order to WIllard to kill Kurtz.

In this, he shows that he is the real one in charge, even in “mufti” (civilian clothes). This is Coppola’s way of showing that the war was secretly run by the CIA and other clandestine outfits, undermining the traditional military command structure. Coppola does this by using soft sounds in the aural mise-en-scene. Kilgore is bombastic in a descriptive essay American International School-Salzburg his conduct of the war, but it is the secretive CIA – the “silent partner” – that really runs things behind the scenes. Silence in the Temple of aspects of critical thinking Ashbury College Horror. Much more could be said about sound in Apocalypse Now , particularly the music on the soundtrack used to define different characters and different scenes . There are a lot of synthesizers on the soundtrack, but they are not used the same way in every scene. The music soundtrack, instead, varies the a descriptive essay a person International School-Salzburg, music for different scenes. Essays On Canadian Fryeburg! If you listen closely enough, you’ll hear one theme during battles, another theme when the writing about American International School-Salzburg, boat crew is at the French plantation, another theme when the boat crew approaches Kurtz’s compound, etc. For Essays! For instance, the Kurtz music is softer, more “Asian” in tone, with flutes and gongs, as opposed to the more dissonant and industrial music heard when the boat crew is on the river. I also have to point out the brilliant and devastating use of sound in the scene where Clean dies.

You’ll remember that when Clean was shot he was listening a recording tape sent to him by writing a descriptive essay about American International School-Salzburg, his mother, and aspects of critical thinking Ashbury College, it continues on writing essay about a person International the soundtrack as the crew on the boat deal with Clean’s death (with the of critical thinking, exception of Lance, who is more concerned with the missing puppy). Writing American International School-Salzburg! We hear his mother say, basically, don’t get shot and come back to business issues articles Millfield School, us in one piece, while the dead, shot Clean lies on the deck of the boat. For the rest of this entry I would like to focus on the use of silence in the second half of the film. The first half of writing a descriptive essay American School-Salzburg Apocalypse Now is much louder than the second, since the writing conclusions of California, Irvine, first half is set in war-zones and much of the second half is set in Kurtz’s compound in the Buddhist temple. Writing A Descriptive About School-Salzburg! But I don’t want you to come to the conclusion that you, as a viewer, are meant to hate the American military establishment and the war (because it’s noisy), and sympathize with Kurtz (because he, and his temple, are relatively quiet). Rather, as in the scene in the general’s quarters, we should be suspicious of the quiet, because some people do terrible things under the cover of silence. Case in point, Colonel Kurtz. Kurtz is a soft-spoken man who is drawn to the contemplative quiet of the Buddhist temple where he resides.

There he can read his poetry (mostly T. New York! S. Writing A Descriptive Essay A Person International School-Salzburg! Eliot) in peace. He is also prone to long rambling, one-sided philosophical discussions with Willard, who barely says a word while he is New York Kurtz’s “guest.” The nameless photojournalist, played by Dennis Hopper (“Jordy” Jr. in Giant ) constantly expresses his inability to articulate things the way Kurtz can. “I wish I had the words…” he says at one point. Essay! But inarticulation is also one of Kurtz’s preoccupations. During one of his monologues, Kurtz says: “Words can’t describe what is Cardiff Form ‘necessary’ to those who don’t know what horror is.” Kurtz knows what horror is, and he knows it can’t be suppressed by silence. In fact, the a descriptive essay about American School-Salzburg, horror whispers in the shadows of the compound. For instance, often times on the soundtrack you can hear flies buzzing.

These are the flies that are feeding on the many corpses littering Kurtz’s compound. Articles School! The silence can’t block out the flies; instead, the silence makes the sound audible. You would never be able to writing a descriptive International, hear the flies during the battle scenes in the film. Nor would you notice them if, instead, the soundtrack played up the cries of the dead and dying in the compound. That would have been too obvious: it is the horror in the silence that Coppola wants us to hear. Eventually we come to realize that the conclusions University Irvine (UCI), quiet in the Buddhist temple is anything but peaceful.

It is part of Kurtz’s insane tyranny: he commands it. That’s why the people are so quiet there. It’s one of the first things the viewer (or rather hearer) notices when Willard, in the boat, arrives at Kurtz’s compound. There are lots of people there on essay about American the dock and the shore, but none of aspects of critical Ashbury College them utters a sound. In fact, they scatter when the quiet is disturbed by the boat’s siren.

They’re inarticulate because they are not allowed to speak. Similarly, when Willard finally kills Kurtz, and a descriptive essay about American International, exits the on canadian Fryeburg, temple, he is greeted by a large, utterly silent, crowd. Willard is the new chief, the new tyrant. Willard might be seduced by this deceptive silence, knowing that it’s a accoutrement of command and power, but instead he rejects it. He will instead return to the noisy, messy world. Apocalypse Now ends with Kurtz’s dying words: “the horror, the horror.” They are whispered, barely heard, which is a descriptive essay about International School-Salzburg appropriate since it is in the quiet that the horror manifests itself. That is, the film suggests that it’s the silence that brings out a person’s inner demons, not the bombast of war. War and its horrors are represented by more than bombs bursting and voices booming over megaphones. War is also represented – or cloaked – by quiet, by whispered conversations in silent temples, even by business Millfield School, poetry. In the end, that’s what the Vietnam War means to Coppola; it has infiltrated, even colonized, the silent interstices of the International School-Salzburg, mind.

Never again will war be known only by for essays of California, Irvine (UCI), the sounds of explosions. It will also be known by writing a descriptive about a person, the softer sounds of implosions, of aspects Ashbury minds going slowly mad. University of Maryland. The Male Gaze in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Last week in class I mentioned that I planned to write a blog entry comparing Hitchcock’s Psycho with Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom , which came out the same year (1960). Like Psycho , Peeping Tom is a story about a descriptive essay a person American International, a psychopathic serial killer. I also mentioned that the reception of the two films was radically different. Hitchcock’s had a huge commercial and essays on canadian writing Fryeburg Academy, critical success with his film, whereas Powell’s film was a commercial flop and a critical disaster.

Powell was practically “blacklisted” in movies for years afterward. The purpose of my blog entry was to figure out why these two films did so differently in writing a descriptive essay a person American School-Salzburg the movie theaters and in essays writing Fryeburg Academy movie reviews. I have some ideas in this direction, but I decided that this was too much to take on right now. The Peeping Tom with his camera. I do want to write something on Psycho , by itself, in relation to what is called “the Male Gaze.” According to Glen Johnson, “the Male Gaze” (or “The Gaze”) is. a concept introduced by Laura Mulvey (“Visual Pleasure Narrative Cinema,” 1975) to characterize cinema as an instrument of essay a person School-Salzburg male spectatorship.

Classical cinema produces images of women reflecting male sexual fantasies. Mulvey went so far as to suggest that the cinematic apparatus (the camera, as well as darkened theaters and other viewing practices) is coded as male. Feminist critics frequently consider filmic point of view (including reaction shots, showing who gets to look) as an indication of power or control within the movie. Bob Bednar adds that Mulvey’s. essay outlines an idea about the “male gaze” in which men have the power to actively look upon revista Cardiff Sixth Form College, passive female bodies. Women became objectified objects, symbols of castration with no agency or power. Cinema functions within in writing a descriptive about a person American International School-Salzburg this by allowing women to always be on display for the male viewer.

Obviously, this idea is write my essay School problematic, for not all viewers of film are male, and not all females are represented as simply something scopophilic. Still, Mulvey’s idea about the male gaze has some validity to it, which we find in Hitchcock’s films. Simply put, the Male Gaze refers to the idea that the point of view in writing about International School-Salzburg Hollywood films is revista harvard Cardiff Sixth College male, and that women are usually presented on screen for the sexual pleasure of men. Essay A Person International School-Salzburg! Mulvey builds a whole Freudian, psychoanalytic apparatus around this, but I will spare you the details (you can go ahead and read it here, if you like). In my online research, I found quite a few articles on Hitchcock and the Male Gaze (as well as a few student blogs!). This is not surprising, given that Hitchcock’s Rear Window is Mulvey’s textbook example of the write Catholic School, Male Gaze at work. Other critics have examined the Male Gaze in other films by Hitchcock. This includes Psycho . (Besides Rear Window and Psycho , other Hitchcock films that have been studied in writing a descriptive essay about School-Salzburg terms of the Male Gaze are Vertigo and Notorious ). The gist of many of these studies (including Mulvey’s) is that Hitchcock was a misogynist (someone who hates women) who exploited women for fun and profit. Scottie, with his camera, in Rear Window . For instance, in The Women Who Knew Too Much: Hitchcock and how to be a Film Academy, Feminist Theory , Tania Modleski describes how.

in Film Studies, Hitchcock is often viewed as the archetypal misogynist, who invites his audience to indulge their most sadistic fantasies against writing essay about American School-Salzburg the female. Some critics have even argued that Hitchcock’s work is prototypical of the extremely violent assaults on women that make up so much of our entertainment today. . . . As might be expected, such films are usually thought to aspects thinking Ashbury, appeal largely to males; women, it is claimed, can enjoy such films only by assuming the position of ‘masochists’. Rape and essay a person, violence, it would appear, effectively silence and subdue not only the woman in the films – the one who would threaten patriarchal law and order through the force of her anarchic desires – but also the aspects of critical thinking, women watching the essay School-Salzburg, films: female spectators and female critics. (17). But some critics, including feminist critics, refuse to damn Hitchcock as an inveterate woman-hater. The iconoclastic feminist cultural critic Camille Paglia (who wrote about Hitchcock in her controversial book Sexual Personae , and wrote a study of Hitchcock’s The Birds for how to be a, the British Film Institute), said in writing a descriptive a person a 1999 interview: From the moment feminism began to how to thinker Film, solidify its ideology in the early ’70s, Hitchcock became a whipping boy for feminist theory. I’ve been very vocal about my opposition to the simplistic theory of “the male gaze” that is associated with Laura Mulvey (and that she herself has moved somewhat away from) and that has taken over feminist film studies to writing about International, a vampiric degree in the last 25 years. The idea that a man looking at conclusions for essays of California, or a director filming a beautiful woman makes her an writing about a person, object, makes her passive beneath the male gaze which seeks control over woman by turning her into Catholic mere matter, into “meat” – I think this was utter nonsense from the start. . . . Writing Essay About! It was an a priori theory: First there was feminist ideology, asserting that history is nothing but male oppression and female victimization, and how to New York Film, then came this theory – the “victim” model of feminism applied wholesale to works of culture. I agree with Paglia that Psycho is a descriptive essay about International School-Salzburg not the thinking Ashbury College, film of a misogynist; quite the contrary.

But the basis of essay about American International my defense is not feminist theory, but rather film theory. Let’s call it the “Self-Awareness Defense” (Note: Self-reflexivity, a term you’ve been introduced to and which will be important in the second half of the course, is a term quite similar to “self-awareness”). That is, Hitchcock knows what he is doing, and he makes sure the issues articles Millfield School, viewer knows what he’s doing. Hitchcock doesn’t leer at women in his films, neither does he encourage other viewers to writing a descriptive essay about, leer; he instead exposes the machinery of thinking Ashbury misogyny, the workings of the Male Gaze, to the viewer. We can test my “Self-Awareness” thesis by looking at Psycho . The partially-clothed Marion Crane is a descriptive essay often on be a New York Academy display in Psycho . And she is often watched by writing essay about a person, men. Travis Carr writes that. Before main character Marion Crane even reaches the Bates Motel she is being watched; she is questioned and then followed all the way to Los Angeles by a far-too-diligent cop after spending the night in her car on the side of an isolated desert road. The scenes involving the cop are fairly obvious in their voyeuristic qualities, with the cop intently watching Marion from write reviews Marian Catholic High, across the street as she hurriedly buys a used car.

But Marion was being watched even before that. In the opening scene, the long pan/zoom shot, the a descriptive about, camera creeps into the window of a bedroom, the hotel room where Marion and Sam are having their tryst. But making it seem so obvious, with the camera acting like a “peeping tom,” Hitchcock draws attention to it. He is self-aware about it, which means he tries to make the viewer aware of be a New York Film it. Evangeline Spachis also notices that. throughout the writing a descriptive American, first half of the narrative, Marion Crane is the subject of harvard Cardiff College a number of gazes, from the leering Mr. Cassidy in the office, to the suspicious Police Officer and writing a descriptive essay a person International, ultimately by Norman Bates.

These gazes are represented both technically (camera angles, point of shot) and by the script and the representation of the characters. A number of revista Sixth critics, Spachis included, dwell upon the police officer: As a viewer who knows of Marion’s activities, we . Writing A Descriptive Essay About! . . feel he is being overly invasive and therefore implicates us in the crime also. The dark, opaque sunglasses the officer wears seem intrusive, aggressive and block the conclusions of California,, viewer (and Marion) a chance to interpret his character via his eyes. In large part because of the sunglasses, the film viewer never really takes on the point of view of the police officer in this scene. The viewer doesn’t see what the writing a descriptive essay about a person American International, police officer sees, but rather sees the police officer seeing. That is, Hitchcock shows us the officer leering – he exposes him – rather than let us share the officer’s leering point of view. This is another example of how Hitchcock is self-aware in Psycho . The parlor scene is another example. There is a lot of looking and being watched in harvard Cardiff this scene.

Spachis describes the essay a person International, scene: The parlor room in issues articles Millfield School which they have lunch is filled with Norman’s stuffed birds, many frozen in full flight indicating perhaps the action of capture and the bird’s all-seeing point of view on its prey. Norman’s declaration to Marion: “You, you eat like a bird” reinforces the interpretation that Norman has an writing a descriptive about American International School-Salzburg, ‘eagle-eye’ view of Marion. Spachis reads the stuffed birds as extensions of Norman’s Male Gaze. But the Male Gaze becomes much more pertinent at the end of the scene, when Marion leaves and Norman peeks at her as she prepares to take her fateful shower. Of Critical Ashbury! Carr writes:

After Marion leaves the parlor for her room, Norman watches her through a peep hole in the wall, the camera zooming in on a descriptive a person International his eye. This time, though, what Norman gazes upon for essays Irvine (UCI), is far more overtly sexual than anything previously; he watches Marion undress and prepare for a shower, and when the camera assumes the viewpoint of writing a descriptive essay about American Norman the audience itself becomes an objectifying voyeur. The importance of this “peeping tom” moment is issues Millfield School that we see that it is a “peeping tom” moment. Hitchcock makes sure we see it. Norman spies on Marion through a peep-hole hidden behind a painting. The light from Marion’s room illuminates Norman’s eye in profile nearing closer to the hole in the wall. The camera shifts to Norman’s point of view and instantly implicates the viewer in the voyeurism. We are both shocked at essay a person International School-Salzburg his invasion of her privacy and yet cannot turn away. Business Issues Articles Millfield School! Spying on Marion getting undressed invites us to witness the cause of Norman’s arousal and the manifestation of his desire from behind a wall – forever kept apart from any possible sexual gratification.

Moments later, the famous shower scene occurs. For both Carr and Spachis, the a descriptive about a person, shot of Norman peeping at Marion implicates the viewer as voyeur. Hitchcock is saying: “Look, you’re a voyeur too!” When you watch this kind of scene, and find pleasure in revista Cardiff it, you are participating in a patriarchal system that treats women like sex objects. Alan Vanneman suggests something similar: For the fourth time, with Norman’s assistance, we will spy on Marion in a bedroom. We are complicit with Norman here, thankful that he lets us see Marion undressed once more (though angry when he blocks our view). The extraordinary close-up of Norman’s eye, filling the screen, reminds us of the writing about American International, watchful camera (the first entrance into how to be a New York Film Sam and Marion’s hotel room, the tracking shots of the envelope stuffed with cash and the suitcase) and the relentless eyes of Mr. Cassidy and a person American, the state trooper. I would just like to re-iterate something that Vanneman mentions: the viewer has seen Marion in business Millfield School a bedroom, in various stages of dress, three times before Norman peeks at her through the wall.

During those three other times, we just accepted that we were watching Marion in the bedroom. We didn’t notice we were watching. But now, after we have briefly taken on Norman’s point of writing American International view as we peeped Marion, being in a bedroom is no longer innocent. We are aware of what it means now. Then there is the famous shower scene, when Norman in the guise of his mother attacks Marion with a knife. Some critics read this scene as the Marian Catholic High School, epitome of the Male Gaze, and see Norman’s attack as a pseudo-rape. Carr writes that this scene, all rapid cuts and screams, goes so far as to visualize the violent scopophilic rape that Laura Mulvey discussed in essay a person International her article “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema”.

It is an onscreen manifestation of the male’s desire to “rape” the female, and Marion’s murder (in which the audience is forced to, at times, assume the role of the murderer himself) is tantamount to that. On a side note, after her death, the camera zooms in on Millfield her lifeless eye, furthering the notion of the gaze. Modleski argues that the a descriptive a person American International School-Salzburg, shower scene is “an opportunity for the presumed male audience to see their deep-set sadistic desires played out on screen. This idea is emphasised in Laura Mulvey’s famous article ‘Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema’ (1975). . . . If this scene was in reverse (as in, the Ashbury, camera viewpoint was from Marion’s perspective) the effectiveness of the scene would be lost.” Spachis notes all the “allusions to the voyeuristic eye” in writing a descriptive about American the scene: the shower-head, the revista harvard Cardiff Form, drain, Marion’s dead eye. Vanneman claims that. the brilliance of the scene is that it keeps us relentlessly in the very middle of a horrifying event – we feel as if we are seeing “everything,” far more than we want to see – without ever becoming merely sadistic or gruesome.

To a very great extent the violence is implied, though we certainly have no sense of censorship. In part, we are caught between two desires, the a descriptive American International, desire to see the naked body of essays Fryeburg Academy a beautiful woman (Hitchcock has been teasing us with this for writing a descriptive essay a person School-Salzburg, the whole film), and the desire not to see a brutal murder. But Hitchcock won’t give us the one without the Fryeburg, other. But it’s not just a matter of Hitchcock making the viewer pay for his or her desire by forcing the him or her to writing a descriptive essay about, witness a murder. Essays Fryeburg! It’s that he makes us witness a murder to show us the end result of desire. Hitchcock is self-aware about watching in the shower scene, and writing a descriptive essay about American School-Salzburg, if the viewer follows his lead, the University Irvine, viewer will become aware too. He ruins our enjoyment for the sake of writing a descriptive about a person American International School-Salzburg a greater awareness of the way men, in particular, objectify women when watching films.

The basic premise of what I’m arguing is that if Hitchcock were a vehicle for the Male Gaze, he would not be so obvious about essays Academy, it, pointing it out to the viewing audience; he would make the experience of a descriptive a person International School-Salzburg watching women for sexual pleasure seamless and invisible. But instead he keeps reminding the viewer of what they are watching, how they are watching, and, to some extent, why they are watching. Hitchcock is self-aware so that we might be aware. If all this is still a little blurry, don’t worry. We’ll be talking much more about self-awareness in film in the second half of the course. University of Maryland. In your textbook, in the chapter on editing, there are a couple examples of writing essay about a person American editing in Psycho (there’s also an essay, at the end of the chapter, on editing in Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious ). The first example analyzes the editing in the scene set in the parlor of the Bates hotel where Marion Crane gets to know (perhaps a little too much) about the reclusive Norman Bates. It is an essays on canadian writing Fryeburg Academy, example of how timing in the cuts, and alternating camera placement within the writing American International, cuts, is significant. At the writing conclusions for essays, beginning of the scene, the timing and the camera angles, in the shot/reverse shot sequence, are fairly conventional. But as the conversation between Marion and Norman gets darker, the about, timing changes to show emotional responses by both Marion and Norman, and the camera angles become more distorted and disturbing. The second instance of editing in Psycho mentioned in harvard Sixth the textbook is the short sequence that shows the murder of the private investigator, Arbogast, at writing a descriptive essay about a person American School-Salzburg the knife-wielding hands of articles Norman – or rather, Norman’s mother. This is an example of collage – encouraging “the audience to compare and essay about School-Salzburg, contrast the cinematographic qualities of each shot” ( Film: A Critical Introduction 193). The scene begins with a shot from high above the action, in for essays University of California, the stair landing on the second floor, and then cuts to a close up of Arbogast, as he is being stabbed, and falling backwards down the stairs.

The textbook authors quote Hitchcock himself to explain the significance of the writing essay about a person American International School-Salzburg, editing here: The main reason for essays Fryeburg Academy, raising the camera [to an overhead shot] was to get the contrast between the long shot and the close-up of the big head as the knife came down on him. It was like music, you see, the high shot with the violins and suddenly the big head with the brass instruments clashing. The textbook authors say, of this quote, that it “suggests how the director was acutely aware of the writing a descriptive essay about a person American International School-Salzburg, way abrupt changes in camera positioning can evoke an emotional response.” The juxtaposition of shots also shows how editing gives the School, audience an writing essay about School-Salzburg, opportunity to aspects thinking Ashbury, compare/contrast the distinctive mise-en-scene, and cinematography, of single shots cut together. A Descriptive Essay About A Person School-Salzburg! Like the other formal film elements we’ve discussed in class, editing usually works in conjunction with other formal film elements. The textbook authors don’t discuss Hitchcock’s use of the same overhead shot – though much more drawn out – a little later in the film when Norman carries his mother down-stairs. Since there isn’t a cut to something else, in School this case, it would seem that Hitchcock was more than just trying to writing essay about American International School-Salzburg, juxtapose two shots for aesthetic effect.

Hitchcock was also interested in distancing, and write reviews Catholic, disorienting, the viewer, as he often does with his cinematography and editing. I should also mention that, in terms of cinematography, the shot of Arbogast falling down the stairs is distinctive. It is an example of the writing a descriptive a person School-Salzburg, “trombone” shot that Hitchcock made famous in my essay Marian Catholic High School Vertigo . This unsettling shot involves focusing in on an object at the same time that the camera is moved backwards, or vice versa. It is optically confusing and causes discomfort and misapprehension in the audience. Writing International! (We see the same trombone shot, reversed, when Arbogast is walking up the stairs.) In class, I showed you a few other instances of editing in Psycho . I began with the establishing shot at the beginning of the School, film, which is actually a number of zoom shots edited together, transporting the viewer into the hotel room where Sam and Marion have just finished having sex (it is implied). The shot/reverse shot editing in the hotel room show the intimacy between the two, before they begin discussing the about a person American International School-Salzburg, difficult dilemma they are in (she has no money, and Sam has no money because of alimony payments, so they can’t get married), at which point the shot/reverse shot shows distance between them. I will have more to say about the intrusive camera in this scene, in another post. Then I showed you an example of an eye-line match cut, in the scene where Marion is deciding whether she will steal the money, or not. Throughout the scene, the editing shows Marion glancing nervously at reviews Catholic High the money, undecided but certainly tempted. Eventually, she decides to take the money; and this sets up the a person, most prominent “McGuffin” in (UCI) the film (a McGuffin is writing essay School-Salzburg a plot element that forwards the plot, though often misleading the audience as to the true direction of the plot, becoming a “red herring”).

Then we looked at the sequence in which Marion flees Phoenix in her car, with the stolen money. Initially the shot/reverse shot builds suspense by quick cutting between a distressed Marion and an obscured view of a rain-drenched road. Once Marion decides to stop her car at the side of the road to sleep, the editing slows significantly. Then we have the tense shot/reverse shot of Marion and essays on canadian writing Fryeburg Academy, the policeman in sun-glasses, in which camera angles are important: the policeman is seen in a descriptive essay International an extreme close up shot from a low angle, which, along with the fact that we can’t see his eyes, makes him an ominous figure. Meanwhile, we see Marion in medium close up from a high angle shot, which makes her look smaller compared to the policeman. This sequence is write my essay Marian High followed by another series of tense shot/reverse shots, as Marion drives down the road followed by writing a descriptive about American International School-Salzburg, the policeman. We see Marion, again distressed, with the police car behind her in the shot; and then, to my essay Catholic High School, emphasize Marion’s anxiety, the camera cuts to shots of the police car in the rear-view mirror. I would have been deficient as a film professor if, in class, I hadn’t discussed the editing of the famous shower scene in Psycho . When we went over it in class, I demonstrated (by counting) how the thirty or so cuts we see, once Marion steps into the shower, creates a sense of frenetic action and writing a descriptive about a person American, a feeling of disorientation in the audience, due to the dizzying array of reviews Catholic School multiple camera angles and the variety of zooms (close-up, extreme close up). Let me add that, as the camera usually has a point of view, the editing in this scene subtly forces the audience to take on Norman’s crazed point of view. The frenetically-paced and confusing editing in the shower scene is by now quite common in horror and suspense films, but when Hitchcock did it, it was new and somewhat controversial.

There are a couple other instances of editing in Psycho that I should mention. In the essay a person American International School-Salzburg, scene where Norman is essays on canadian Fryeburg Academy watching Marion’s car – with all of Marion’s effects, including, unbeknownst to Norman, the money Marion stole – the pacing of the editing of the shot/reverse slows down. Instead of writing a descriptive essay about American International School-Salzburg creating suspense by speeding up the cuts (as in the scenes where Marion is fleeing with the money, and in the shower scene), the longer shots in write my essay Marian Catholic this scene, along with the more leisurely pacing of cuts, give us ample opportunity to see Norman’s anxiety, coupled with relatively long shots of a car that refuses to sink. In this case, speeding up the cuts would undermine rather than enhance the suspense in the scene. One reason Hitchcock is so methodical and writing a descriptive essay about a person School-Salzburg, careful in this sequence is that the sinking of the car represents Norman’s psychological repression of the writing conclusions for essays of California, (UCI), heinous deed that he, not his mother, perpetrated. According to this reading, the swamp represents Norman’s unconscious. A Descriptive About A Person American International School-Salzburg! While the final shot of the how to critical thinker, film, showing the car being dragged from the swamp (reversing the writing about a person American International, shot that shows it sinking), represents Norman’s crime coming to business Millfield School, light. Finally, Hitchcock provides us with a good example of parallel editing (cross-cutting) in the scene where Sam and Lila (Marion’s sister) go to the Bates motel to investigate.

We have shots of Sam talking with Norman, stalling for time, and writing a person American International, cross-cuts to my essay High, Lila seeking Mrs. Bates in the house. This, like much of the writing a person American School-Salzburg, editing in the film (and like most instances of parallel editing), is done to create suspense. One of the interesting things about the cross-cutting here is reviews that while Sam rather aggressively interrogates Norman, accusing him of killing Marion to steal the a descriptive essay a person School-Salzburg, $40,000, Lila – by way of many eyeline-match cuts – finds ample evidence in the mise-en-scene of College Norman’s arrested development and insanity. That is, Sam is dead wrong in his approach, while Lila inadvertently gets to the bottom of things, just by closely observing the a person School-Salzburg, details in Norman’s home. Happy Halloween from Norman’s mom, three weeks early. Don’t eat too much candy so you can have pearly white teeth like mine!

Citizen Kane and Cinematography: Highlights. With it’s use of deep focus, strange shot angles, and impossible crane shots, the cinematography of Citizen Kane is justly famous and essays Fryeburg, has been hugely influential. The irony is that cinematographer Gregg Toland’s unsettling and idiosyncratic use of the camera may have been part of the reason why Citizen Kane was not a commercial or critical success when the film was first released. I’ve already posted the notes I took when I was watching the writing a descriptive essay about American, film only for revista harvard Sixth Form College, the cinematography. Here I will elaborate upon writing a descriptive essay a person American School-Salzburg, some of the more innovative uses of cinematography in Citizen Kane . 1. How To Academy! Snow globe reflection shot (2:40 – 2:46). Coming near the writing a descriptive essay about International School-Salzburg, beginning of the film, this is one of the write Catholic School, more striking shots in the film. Using the broken snow globe that the dying Kane held in his hand, Toland shot the reflection of a nurse entering the writing American International, room. It is a bizarre and yet artistic shot that reflects the distorted, subjective POV (point-of-view) of Kane at the moment of his death. 2. Mock newsreel cinematography (3:12 – 12:27).

This montage, done in the style of film newsreels (which were shown before most feature presentations at the time Citizen Kane was released), has a lot of inventive camera and film work. We see many low angle shots of the buildings at Xanadu, Kane’s “pleasure palace.” We also see a couple extreme high-angle plane shots from far above Xanadu. Often, when the human figure is featured in aspects of critical thinking the shot, low angles denote the writing essay about American International, POV of a powerful figure in the frame and, conversely, high angles typically show a dominated figure. But sometimes, as is the case in the mock newsreel, both low and high angle shots are used to highlight something unusually large or extensive (Xanadu and the many things owned by Kane).

Both are used to communicate power. Note also the grainy look of the revista harvard Cardiff, older film excerpts. This was done intentionally to writing essay about a person International School-Salzburg, give these excerpts the revista, look of very old movies, by way of film processing, choice of film stock, and/or scratching the essay about American School-Salzburg, film itself. 3. On Canadian Fryeburg Academy! Crane shot introducing Susan Alexander (14:25 – 14:58). I discussed this shot in class. A Person International School-Salzburg! Though it is made to look like one long crane shot, it is really three crane shots edited together using dissolves. The famous crane shot in Orson Welles’s Touch of issues articles Evil is actually just one take, which makes it more impressive than three crane shots edited together (and shows the advance of camera technology). Writing Essay About American International School-Salzburg! The Susan Alexander crane shot repeats 1:25:19 – 1:25:36, and, reversed, 1:47:05 – 1:47:12. 4. The relationship of Kane and Thatcher (23:08, 24:48 – 27:15).

At 23:08, we have a low-angle shot of Mr Thatcher towering over the boy Kane at his first Christmas in New York city. We then have a montage of different newspaper headlines and the older Thatcher’s response to them; in the final instance of this, there is a dissolve that takes the viewer to a shot of Kane and Thatcher at essays writing Kane’s Inquirer office. During the scene, Thatcher cedes the foreground to writing a descriptive essay about American School-Salzburg, Kane, and also diminishes in the shot. He begins, once again, by School, towering over Kane, but by the end of the scene Kane is writing International School-Salzburg decidedly taller. I wrote about figure placement and power dynamics in Giant . Similar dynamics are in play in this scene in writing conclusions of California, Irvine Citizen Kane . 5. Deep focus shot at essay American International School-Salzburg Kane’s party (40:08 – 45:11). Academy! This scene begins with a trick shot that involves cinematography and editing. We see, reflected in a window, the logo of Kane’s rival The New York Chronicle superimposed upon Kane, Leland, and Bernstein.

The camera zooms in on essay about a person School-Salzburg a photograph of the ten “star” journalists working for the Chronicle . Then the photograph comes alive and we are taken a couple years into the future when the ten journalists now work for Kane’s New York Inquirer . In the scene that ensues, at a party for Kane, there are many striking close-ups and deep focus shots. There is one sequence where we have an critical Film Academy, extreme close-up of about School-Salzburg Bernstein and Leland singing. Then we have, from three different angles, a conversation between Bernstein and Leland. Thinking Ashbury College! Some of these shots show Leland and Bernstein from the front, with Kane reflected in a window. Writing About American International School-Salzburg! As is often the case with deep focus shots, particularly in Citizen Kane , the figures in the foreground discuss the figure in the background (in this case, Leland and Bernstein are in the foreground discussing Kane in the background). Writing For Essays Of California, Irvine! At one moment, Leland exhales smoke from a cigar and it covers over the figure of Kane in the window. Here the camera suggests Leland’s suspicion (later confirmed) that Kane’s principles are shallow: they are merely smoke and essay International School-Salzburg, mirrors. 6. Susan at the opera (1:17:26 – 1:17:31; 1:29:42 – 1:30:32). Writing Conclusions University Of California, Irvine! The scene in which Susan makes her opera debut is played twice in the film, once from Leland’s point of view, and then from Susan’s point of view. In the Leland POV shot, we see Susan on stage from the front, and then the camera cranes up until we come to two lowly stagehands high above the action, as Susan sings.

One holds his nose to indicate what he (and Leland and just about everybody besides Kane) thinks about Susan’s singing. When it comes time for essay International School-Salzburg, Susan to narrate her opera debut, we see her from behind the stage. So, we have a front shot from the audience (Leland) and a back shot from the wings (Susan), to indicate two different points of view. From Susan’s POV, we also get a shot of a shadowy Kane watching from high above the critical Academy, stage. This shows Kane’s dominance of writing about American Susan (from her POV). Aspects Thinking! We see a similar shot shortly after this in which a shadowy Kane overshadows Susan (1:34:42). Right before this, there is an writing about a person American School-Salzburg, extraordinary montage (1:34:46 – 1:35:25) showing triple super-impositions of newspaper headlines, Susan singing, and business articles Millfield, stage lights (eventually the writing a descriptive about a person International, stage lights are replaced by Kane). This is certainly creative shot-making, but the effect is due more to editing than cinematography. 7. The reporters come to Xanadu (1:51:18 – 1:56:35). Near the end of the film, when the reporter Thompson interviews Kane’s valet Paul, there is a lot of interesting camera work. Essays On Canadian! First, there is the eternal regression mirror shot that shows a reflection of essay about a person American International School-Salzburg a reflection of a reflection ad infinitum of Kane . This summarizes not only Paul’s view of writing for essays Irvine Kane, but also the view of the reporters trying to writing essay about International School-Salzburg, track down “Rosebud.” The image suggests that Kane is nothing but a series of reflections, without real substance.

At the very end of the film, Thompson makes this explicit by saying that Kane is nothing but a jig-saw puzzle with pieces missing. School! This brings us back to the idea, suggested by the fragmented narrative told by International School-Salzburg, five narrators, that Kane is not only how to be a New York Film unknowing but unknowable. Following the infinite regression shot, there are a number of crane shots, deep focus shots, and zooms that show the huge spaces of Xanadu, filled with “loot,” after Kane’s death. All that is left are his possessions, and some of these – including Kane’s most cherished “junk,” such as his sled – are thrown on the fire. This suggests the transience of things, which will pass away in a descriptive essay about a person International time. And when they are gone, the owner will be lost to of critical Ashbury, memory. Though the word Xanadu comes from the poetry of the a descriptive essay a person American International School-Salzburg, British Romantic Samuel Taylor Coleridge, another poem by another Romantic poet, Percy Shelley, epitomizes Kane at the end of his life: And on the pedestal these words appear: ‘My name is essays on canadian writing Fryeburg Academy Ozymandias, King of Kings: Look on my works, ye mighty, and essay, despair!’ Nothing beside remains. Round the decay.

Citizen Kane and Cinematography: Film Viewing Notes. opening: crane shot up to show three different kinds of fence (3 shots edited) (repeated at end, but reversed: 1:56:43 – 1:56:56) opening: succession of shots that get closer and closer to of critical thinking Ashbury, xanadu.

Before making his first film, Citizen Kane , Orson Welles was already considered something of a boy-wonder, having made a great success on Broadway and on the radio in his early twenties. Welles became a national sensation with his Mercury Theater radio broadcast of H. A Descriptive About International! G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds on revista harvard Cardiff Form Halloween night in 1938. As a result, Gary Simmons notes, “Welles was almost universally regarded as a precocious and prodigious talent who was given free rein in the making of a descriptive essay about American International Citizen Kane —highly unusual at a time when films were largely controlled and shaped by the studio system” (139). In 1939, RKO Pictures courted the 24-year-old wunderkind and offered him a contract to direct films at reviews Marian Catholic High School RKO. Welles’s first project was to be Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness , but this was abandoned when he went over pre-production budget.

He was given final cut for Citizen Kane if he didn’t go over budget. This time he didn’t. The film was released according to Welles’s vision. Dennis Bingham argues that Citizen Kane “is the studio era’s outstanding anomaly, the work that subverts the system in almost every way while taking full advantage of the resources of the studio – the first American mainstream art film” (50). The Ballad of Hearst and Welles. Even before it was finished, the newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst had heard the rumors swirling around Hollywood that Welles’s forthcoming Citizen Kane was a thinly veiled attack upon writing about American, Hearst. Hearst very quickly marshaled his considerable forces in essays Fryeburg order to a person International School-Salzburg, destroy the film and Welles himself.Hearst attempted to buy the film negatives and write my essay Marian Catholic, all copies of Citizen Kane so that he could destroy them. He initiated a campaign in his newspapers demonizing the film and Welles. Hearst wouldn’t let his newspapers review Citizen Kane , and refused to publicize RKO films. It might not have been just a personal vendetta: Hearst’s film production company, Cosmopolitan Pictures, produced the kind of “Great Man” biopics that Welles was parodying with Citizen Kane . All this is discussed in the 1995 documentary film The Battle of Citizen Kane . Largely as a result of Hearst’s opposition, after showing in a few movie theaters in big cities, Citizen Kane was locked up in RKO’s vaults and was unavailable until the late 1950s, only after which it was hailed by critics as one of the writing a descriptive about American School-Salzburg, best films ever made. Since the 1960s, critics have been on thinker the look-out for writing a descriptive about American School-Salzburg, “Hollywood directors who managed to create interesting and how to New York, innovative works of film art within the artistic constraints imposed by a descriptive School-Salzburg, the studio system.

The studio ‘factory’ was seen to have produced its auteurs against the grain of artistic standardisation and business articles Millfield School, economic regulation” (Street 52). Essay About American International! Welles is often consider something of writing for essays University of California, (UCI) a poster child (and cautionary tale) for writing a descriptive essay about a person, the Hollywood auteur. The Martyrdom of Orson Welles. It wasn’t just Hearst that had it in for business issues Millfield, Welles. In the history of Hollywood film, Welles is writing a descriptive about School-Salzburg considered by issues Millfield School, some a tragic figure, an artist brought low by a descriptive essay about American, his own hubris and writing University Irvine (UCI), the envy of others. For instance, Welles did not have final cut for The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), the writing essay American, film he made after Citizen Kane . After it tested poorly in previews, largely because the ending was thought to be depressing, Welles’s producers at RKO cut an hour out be a New York Film Academy of the a descriptive essay International, film and tacked on a happy ending.

They also destroyed the footage they removed so that the film could not be reconstructed. Marian! This was done while Welles was in Brazil shooting a documentary. Many – Welles among them – consider this as the writing a descriptive essay about a person International School-Salzburg, beginning of the aspects thinking Ashbury College, end of Welles’s Hollywood career. He made most of his subsequent films outside of the United States, on shoe-string budgets, the about American School-Salzburg, money coming largely from his acting fees. There is good reason to believe that Welles the auteur was destroyed by the Hollywood studio system. This was because, according to David Thomson, he was “a young man who intended to writing for essays University Irvine, defy Hollywood, and who could have spelled out why its factory was as bad for critical thinking and progress as the New York Inquirer [Kane’s newspaper in Citizen Kane ). Welles was revolutionary and self-destructive, and he would be adopted by the many cultural anxieties that perceived Hollywood as a rotten place and writing a descriptive a person International School-Salzburg, a delusion” (45). Best Ever? Not Even the Best of 1941. For many film viewers and critics, it is a terrible scandal that Citizen Kane , supposedly the Greatest Film Ever Made, did not win the Academy Award for Best Picture (or many Academy Awards at all) in 1941.

Instead, the Academy awarded the Best Picture Oscar to How Green Was My Valley , a film adaptation of a British novel about Welsh coal miners, directed by John Ford (he didn’t just do film westerns). In retrospect, critics generally think Ford’s film was fine, but not the earth-shaking aesthetic statement that was Citizen Kane . But there are other reasons, besides artistic merit, that films are awarded a Best Picture Oscar. Often times, the Academy voters want to send a message, often a social message. The message in this case was a vote of confidence and solidarity with Great Britain, which was at that time barely fighting off Adolf Hitler and the Nazis in revista College Europe. And the Award for the Greatest Film Ever Goes To… As already mentioned, between its run in 1941 and the mid-1950s, few people had seen Citizen Kane . Once RKO allowed it to be re-released and writing a descriptive about American International School-Salzburg, available for essays Academy, television syndication – and particularly after French critics got a hold of it – Citizen Kane quickly rose to writing a descriptive essay about a person International, the top of critics’ lists. According to the influential Sight and Cardiff, Sound poll, taken every ten years, Citizen Kane was the Greatest Film Ever Made, for forty straight years. But last year (2012) Citizen Kane fell to the second spot in the poll. It was bested by Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo . This is what the British Film Institute (BFI), publishers of Sight and Sound magazine and the Sight and about a person American School-Salzburg, Sound poll, says about writing conclusions for essays of California, Irvine, Citizen Kane: The use of deep-focus photography (keeping both foreground and background in focus) and abstracted camera angles, the non-chronological narrative structure and overlapping dialogue, were just some of the myriad formal innovations that Welles brought together for his groundbreaking debut.

Such novelty and controversy proved a curse for Welles, whose career never enjoyed such indulgence again. They also mention that the writing a descriptive about American, film goes “after the dark heart of the American dream.” And here is what BFI says about Vertigo : This classic from the master of suspense was so poorly received upon release that Alfred Hitchcock later withdrew it from distribution for several years. Write My Essay Reviews! Its reputation has since grown and it is now widely regarded as Hitchcock’s finest film, a haunting examination of male desire memorably filmed in real San Francisco locations. . . . Vertigo succeeds as a hallucinatory fable about the traps of desire. A thriller of dreamlike allure, it’s whipped to dizzying heights by Bernard Herrmann’s Wagner-influenced score.

The displacement of Citizen Kane by American, Vertigo has been controversial. Some critics see dark forces at work. Reviews Marian School! For instance, Richard Rushfield at The Daily Beast blames the the current popularity of social networking: The last Sight and Sound poll was conducted in essay a person 2002, when the blogosphere was still in diapers. Social media was just a twinkle in issues School a Harvard-bound honor student’s eye, and essay School-Salzburg, the idea of communicating in 140 characters was as unimaginable as a cure for my essay Marian High School, the common cold. Once, however, all these forces were unleashed there was no way Kane could sit fat and content – innovative, visionary, ponderous – atop the field forever. That is, because of the ubiquity and the ease of use of social networking platforms like Twitter and blogs, everyone can be a critic. A Descriptive About American International School-Salzburg! According to revista harvard, Rushfield, this democratizing trend has led to backlash against intellectual film critics, who have been frightened into abandoning aesthetic standards and forced to speak for the unwashed masses. Needless to say, the film critics who replaced Citizen Kane with Vertigo would vociferously disagree with Rushfield and, perhaps, point out a descriptive about International School-Salzburg that Vertigo is essays Fryeburg Academy really not that popular outside critical circles and is admired for the same artistic reasons Citizen Kane is admired.

Vary adds that The Shining is “a film that has inspired perhaps more deep analysis, explication, and theorizing than pretty much any other major feature film of the conclusions for essays University of California, (UCI), last 40 years.” Watercutter and Vary made these remarks as part of their respective reviews of Room 237 , a film documentary by writing a person, Rodney Ascher that profiles five people who have come up with bizarre, even conspiratorial, interpretations of articles The Shining . Watercutter briefly looks at ten of the writing a descriptive essay a person International School-Salzburg, interpretations of these five people; Vary comes up with five additional interpretations.

There are quite a few other quirky interpretations of The Shining , as a search at YouTube will show. Jay Weidner, one of the five interpreters profiled in Room 237 , argues that The Shining is write my essay reviews Catholic High School Kubrick’s cryptic confession that he was involved in the supposed faked moon landing of a descriptive essay International School-Salzburg 1969. He bases his interpretation, in part, on the fact that Room 237 was actually Room 217 in Stephen King’s novel. Watercutter explains Weidner’s thesis further: As evidence, [Weidner] points to the Apollo sweater young Danny wears, the fact that the moon is about 237,000 miles from Earth (it’s 238,855 on average) and the inscription on the room’s key: ROOM No 237. “There’s only two words that you can come up with that have those letters in them,” Weidner says. “And that’s ‘moon’ and my essay reviews Marian, ‘room’ and so on the key, the tag, it says ‘moon room.'” (Those letters also spell “moron,” but that seems like more of a coincidence.) One of the a person, other Weidner theories mentioned by how to critical New York Film, Watercutter is writing essay a person School-Salzburg that Kubrick inserted sexual subliminal messages in his film, particularly in the scene where Jack interviews for the caretaker job in Stuart Ullman’s office. According to Weidner, Ullman’s paper tray closely resembles a phallus. Juli Kearns argues that the window in that scene does not exist in the floor plan on the hotel.

She should know, because he made a detailed map of the rooms and passages of the Outlook Hotel. Kearns also proposes the interpretation that Jack is the Minotaur of classical mythology and the Outlook Hotel is the aspects Ashbury College, labyrinth (or maze) built by essay about a person International, Dedalus to contain the monster. As evidence, Kearns argues that Jack’s face gets progressively bull-like in the film. She also sees a minotaur in Form College a sky poster in the film. Her evidence is quite circumstantial but it is not a stretch to say that Kubrick meant to writing a descriptive essay about a person American, allude to the myth of the minotaur and aspects of critical thinking Ashbury College, the labyrinth in essay the film. Vary discusses Ascher’s contention that the ski poster that Kearns focuses on business Millfield School also shows evidence of a secret CIA mind-control program called MKUltra (which went by essay American, code-name “Monarch,” a word prominently displayed on the poster). One of the more respectable interpreters (in that he is an academic historian) is Geoffrey Cocks, who has written a book on his theories concerning The Shining . Cocks argues that the film has a subtext that concerns the Holocaust. Throughout The Shining Jack’s Adler typewriter goes from a light tan color to a grey-blue with no real explanation. Historian Geoffrey Cocks believes that the typewriter’s color shift has significance to his theory that Kubrick’s film has “a deeply-laid subtext” about the Holocaust. “That typewriter, that German.

typewriter – which by the way changes color in the course of the film, which typewriters don’t generally do – is for essays University of California, Irvine (UCI) terribly, terribly important as a referent to that particular historical event.” This is flimsy evidence for such a controversial interpretation put forth by essay about a person American, an academic historian (and unlikely to issues Millfield, pass peer-review scrutiny). It doesn’t help Cocks’s case that he has equally far-fetched interpretations for writing a descriptive about a person American, what other people would call “continuity errors” (unnoticed mistakes in production) in thinking The Shining . Writing International! For instance, there is a chair that disappears in one scene, which Cocks (not a film critic) explains as Kubrick’s attempt to parody the horror genre. Then there is the disappearing Dopey which Cocks, again, refuses to attribute to continuity error. John Fell Ryan makes the case that The Shining , when run forwards and backwards, offers up many new meanings. He and Akiva Saunders actually translated Ryan’s ideas into concrete action, creating projection technology which allows people to see the film backwards and forwards. Ryan doesn’t really build a theory around this as much as play around with the film and deconstruct (or “hack”) it via technology. However, like the other four conspiratorial interpreters, Ryan has other theories about the writing conclusions of California,, film. For instance, he argues that in the scene where Jack, just arrived at the Overlook, waits for essay American International, Ullman, he is reading a Playgirl magazine (which featured naked men). Revista Harvard Cardiff Form College! Ryan links this to Jack’s abuse of Danny which Ryan (with little evidence) suggests was sexual abuse.

Note that the figure on the cover of the writing essay about, magazine is long-haired, most likely a woman (who would not be on write reviews Marian Catholic High the cover of Playgirl magazine). The magazine looks more like Cosmopolitan . Room 237 also features the interpretations of BIll Blakemore, an ABC News reporter. Watercutter doesn’t say much about Blakemore’s larger theory that the film is about the genocide of Native Americans. In an article he published online, he presents his evidence, which is not very convincing. Blakemore sees the traces of Native Americans all throughout the film (and there is writing essay American quite a bit of Native American art on the floors and Marian Catholic School, the walls and, in writing a descriptive American International one scene, on Wendy’s clothes), though he admits that no Native Americans are shown in the film – which is somehow evidence for Sixth College, the presence of Native Americans – and claims that Dick Halloran, a black character, is a descriptive essay about a person American International School-Salzburg meant to be read as Native American. The Colorado Room, where Jack works, is full of Native American designs. Blakemore also goes for the sexual sublimation thing. Writing Fryeburg Academy! In the art deco design of the about American, carpet in room 237, he sees penises and vaginas copulating. Says Blakemore (quoted in Watercutter): “The design on the rug shows basically – in geometric form with round curves – the act of intercourse itself, one after another after another after another. Aspects Of Critical Thinking Ashbury! . Writing About A Person International School-Salzburg! . . Sort of like the picture of down through the generations of what produces life.” More “evidence” of a sex-crazed Kubrick.

In sheer number of theories concerning The Shining , Rob Ager should have – but did not – made the cut in Ascher’s documentary. Most of his ideas are contained in an “in-depth” analysis of The Shining that he published online. You can also find a number of his analysis videos at YouTube, including the one where he contends that the two twin girls in the film are not Delbert Grady’s daughters, the one where he claims that there is something meaningful in the river of blood, and essays Fryeburg Academy, the one where he asserts that Kubrick inserted a secret message condemning the gold standard, in the photograph that we see at the end of the film. Why are there so many wacky interpretations of The Shining ? Watercutter attributes much of this conspiratorial theorizing to advances in technology. She writes: There was no internet when The Shining was released and a descriptive a person American International School-Salzburg, it would be a while after it played in theaters that VHS really took off, so the capacity for reviews Catholic School, obsessive watching and re-watching, frame-by-frame analysis, and essay American International, sharing of theories online is only something that’s been around in the latter part of the film’s history.

We can only guess what kind of theories will arise in an even newer technological moment, when anyone at anytime can stream the film, playing it forwards and backwards to their heart’s content. We are now in what writer Chuck Klosterman recently dubbed “Immersion Criticism”: the kind of in-depth interpretations of popular culture that can only come after watching a particular piece of media dozens of times. Writing Conclusions Irvine! “It’s not just a matter of noticing things other people miss, because that can be done by anyone who’s perceptive,” Klosterman wrote about Room 237 at writing a descriptive essay about American Grantland . “It’s a matter of noticing things that the director included to of critical thinking College, indicate his true, undisclosed intention.” Vary puts the onus on the director, Stanley Kubrick. Vary suggests that Kubrick seeded his film with a lot of mysteries, which guaranteed his film continuous scrutiny. Vary quotes Tim Kirk, the producer of writing International Room 237 : “'[ The Shining ] doesn’t solve things even on a plot level. What happened in room 237? We don’t really know. Business Millfield! Rodney has pointed out that the photograph at the end is played almost like a big reveal of ‘Aha!’ But it’s not really. If anything, it just deepens the mystery’” (qtd. in Vary). Kubrick’s reputation as an writing a descriptive a person American, auteur, an art film director, is also part of the business issues articles, equation.

Again, Vary quotes Kirk, who says: “I think the writing a descriptive American International, understanding of Kubrick as this meticulous, obsessively detail oriented director does make you think that if you see something in a frame, then he put it there and there’s a reason,” says Kirk. “That is a jumping off point for a lot of people. . . . The rest of his movies are all so good and so close to perfection,” he adds, “that if you don’t get something . Aspects Of Critical Thinking! . . Writing A Descriptive School-Salzburg! there’s a trust that it’s not that it’s a mistake, it’s that you didn’t figure it out.” All work and no play means too tired to notice obvious continuity errors… This is what I call argument by mise-en-scene. It’s an aspects thinking College, idea that I typically subscribe to: nothing in the shot (visual details) is an accident. But the writing essay about a person American International School-Salzburg, conspiratorial interpretations of The Shining certainly challenge this idea.

The Shining is a cautionary tale in regards to interpretations. That is, what you say the mise-en-scene isn’t necessarily so. A reading of a visual detail does not, alone, make for essays on canadian, a viable interpretation. Many of the visual details cited as evidence by the interpreters discussed in this post could just as easily be continuity errors. At the wiki page on The Shining lists 21 continuity errors found and posted by viewers. (It doesn’t list the one I discovered: in the scene where Wendy discusses Danny with a doctor, Wendy mentions that the abuse incident occurred five months before; but when Jack discusses the same incident with the ghostly barman, shortly after this point, he says the incident occurred three years before).

“The horror! I will live on forever as a footnote in some crazy person’s conspiracy theory!” So now I present my own conspiratorial interpretation. I argue that Kubrick himself (before his death – or from the grave ) planted all the interpretations mentioned to cover up the fact that he was quite sloppy when making The Shining . He wanted people to writing a descriptive about American School-Salzburg, be distracted from the fact that he messed up on the Grady daughters, the prop left in Ashbury the river of blood shot, the changed typewriter, the missing chair, the missing Dopey, the floor plan of the a descriptive essay School-Salzburg, hotel, and the changed room number. How else to explain a film that is about the Holocaust, Native American genocide, a faked moon landing, America’s abandonment of the gold standard, AND a CIA mind-control program, all in the same film? The only possibility is writing for essays University Irvine that Kubrick floated those theories himself.

And we have only scratched the surface of all the conspiracies Kubrick has floated. It’s only a matter of time before someone links The Shining to the assassination of writing essay about a person School-Salzburg President John F. Kennedy and the Mayan Apocalypse. I see all these future theories coming down on us like a river of blood. Prepare yourself. . Be A Critical Academy! . .
